Korean MZ Generation’s Political Impact 'Accountability over Loyalty'

South Korea’s political scene is marked by intense polarization between two dominant parties: the conservative People Power Party and the liberal Democratic Party. In this binary structure, voters often find themselves choosing “the lesser evil” rather than a party that fully aligns with their values.

The 2022 presidential election exemplified this divide, with Yoon Suk-yeol narrowly defeating Lee Jae-myung by just 0.7%—the smallest margin in South Korea’s democratic history.

This polarization reflects generational differences in political engagement. Older voters often show loyalty to their chosen party, viewing it as part of their identity, while younger generations focus more on specific issues and fairness over party affiliation. The protests against Yoon Suk-yeol, for example, were not an endorsement of the Democratic Party but a broader demand for accountability. Similarly, when young voters shifted support to the People Power Party, it was less about loyalty and more about dissatisfaction with the Democratic Party’s performance.

The MZ generation evaluates political parties and policies by prioritizing principles over party loyalty, demanding accountability when those principles are violated. Politicians often focus on discrediting their opponents rather than addressing systemic issues, a strategy that risks alienating younger, solution-oriented voters.

The generational divide extends beyond politics to societal values. Older generations, shaped by industrialization and economic development, often prioritize stability and loyalty. In contrast, younger Koreans, who grew up in a globalized and competitive environment, value fairness and adaptability. Fostering mutual understanding across generations is vital for political stability and social cohesion.

The political behavior of the MZ generation highlights that support is not synonymous with unconditional loyalty. Their emphasis on accountability and fairness challenges traditional norms and inspires new leadership approaches. To rebuild trust, political leaders must address systemic issues and focus on constructive problem-solving rather than divisive rhetoric.

As South Korea evolves culturally and politically, leaders face a critical choice: adapt to the transformative values of the MZ generation or remain entrenched in divisive cycles. Their response will shape not only the future of Korean democracy but also its global role.
