The Esan tribe is one of the major ethnic groups in Southern Nigeria, mainly in what is now the Edo Central Senatorial District, in Edo State. The Esan people live primarily in Esanland, a modern term for the 35 kingdoms or clans making up the Esan People comprising Irrua, Ekpoma, Uromi, Ubiaja, Igueben, Egoro, Ekpon, Ewohimi, Emu, Ewatto, Ewosa, Amalu, , Idoa, Illushi, Ifeku, Iyenlen, Ohordua, Okhuesan, Oria, Onogholo, Orowa, Opoji, Ogwa, Okalo, Ebelle, Ewu, Ugboha, Uroh, Uzea, Udo, Urohi, Ojiogba, Ugun, Ugbegun, Amahor and Ukhun. Esanland is situated North of Niger Delta and about Sixty five kilometers North East of Benin City, the Edo State Capital.
The Esan people are undoubtedly the pride of Edo State. The history of Nigeria as a country cannot be written without reference to the selfless contributions of the illustrious Sons and Daughters of the Esan People towards the making, growth, development and the ultimate greatness of our country. The Esan People play dominant roles in all professional bodies, politics, armed forces, academia, aviation, business and agriculture. From the days of Chief Anthony Enahoro, the Sage who moved the motion for independence of Nigeria, Esan people have been at the forefront of Nigeria’s struggle for greatness in Africa.

The Nigerian women have form time immemorial refused to be confined to societal expectation of a subservient condition of domesticity. They have always stood up to be counted in the scheme of things concerning the corporate existence of our great country. History is replete with women of substance who have chosen the path dreaded by the men folk. They have been freedom fighters and gender equality advocates. They are captains of industry and also dominated most professional bodies. The political atmosphere is charged with a new trend of conscious re-awakening of women for a fair deal of affirmative action for political positions. Today, there are many of our women in government as Ministers of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, DGs of MDAs, and Permanent Secretaries etc. Our women are top ranking officers in the Military, Police and other Paramilitary outfits. They are part of the elite community and intelligentsias and also dominated the academia. The advocacy for Women to take charge of the affairs of the country is gathering momentum and as democracy sustains, a Woman President for this country may not be farfetched.
