The Accidental Sales Lady – Fourth Edition: Mastering the Basics: The Secret to Standing Out
When my son was in kindergarten, we had a teacher-parent interview with his teacher, Miss Wallace. I was excited to meet her, but when I walked in, she looked even more excited than I was.
"Miss Obad, I’ve been waiting to meet you!" she exclaimed.
At first, I was a bit thrown off. What had my son done this time? Did he misbehave? Forget to bring his homework?
Miss Wallace leaned in, eyes wide with curiosity, and said, "I need to know what you’re doing at home. What programs is he in? What kind of math or reading work are you doing with him?" She had this intense look on her face like she’d discovered something revolutionary. I sat there thinking, "Wait, what is going on here?"
She went on to explain, "Your son is gifted! While some kids are still learning to count to five, he’s over here multiplying fractions! How does he know how to do this?"
And honestly? I had no idea. He wasn’t in any special program, and I wasn’t using any fancy educational tools. I’m just a BASIC mom.
That’s when it clicked. Baking = Fractions.
All that time we spent in the kitchen baking was teaching my son math. Measuring half a cup, a quarter teaspoon, or an eighth of a cup gave him real-world experience with fractions, without us even realizing it.
As for his reading? I didn’t drill him with flashcards or phonics programs. I simply read to him every night, took him to museums, art galleries, and the ROM, and we spent time talking about everything we saw and learned.
It wasn’t some fancy program that had made my son stand out—it was the basics. The things we do every day: the routines, the connection, the love. That’s when I realized, mastering the basics is often the real "secret sauce" to success.
The Basics Are Your Secret Weapon in Sales
Before you can read, you’ve gotta learn the alphabet, right? Well, before you can be a top salesperson, you’ve got to master the basics. And let me tell you, it's these basics that will set you apart from the crowd—just like my son with his fractions.
Every time you show up on time? That’s basic. But it’s a game-changer. When you remember someone's name and use it in conversation, that’s another basic—and yet, it’s the reason people feel valued and seen. Following up after a meeting or doing exactly what you say you’re going to do? Yep, that’s a basic too. But it’s the foundation of trust and the groundwork for long-term relationships.
Too many people overlook these "little things," thinking they don’t matter or they’re just fluff. But the basics are the very building blocks of success. Master them—like being punctual, courteous, and showing genuine interest in others—and you’ll immediately stand out from the rest.
For instance, one of my favorite tips is to actively listen. Instead of waiting for your turn to speak, listen with intent and follow up with thoughtful questions. This shows that you’re engaged and genuinely care. And people will always remember how you made them feel.

Fashion Tip of the Day
Don’t get caught up in chasing trends. Leave those to the teenagers. Focus on the classics—the well-made pieces that stand the test of time and keep you looking sharp, no matter the season. Whether it's a crisp white shirt or a perfectly tailored blazer, investing in the basics will give you more bang for your buck. Trends come and go, but timeless style? Now that’s forever.
Also, here's a quick tip for fashion consistency: stick to a color palette that complements your wardrobe. Mixing and matching becomes effortless, and you’ll always look polished. A wardrobe full of basics is like mastering the alphabet in fashion. You can spell success with it every single time.
Remember, mastering the basics—whether in fashion, sales, or life—will always make you stand out in a world chasing the next big thing.
Let’s get back to basics, people. They’re the secret to success!
