Accessible travel for blind people newsletter, June 1, 2024

Dear Readers,

?

I’m having too much fun with my new 3d printer. Previously I had objects designed and I ordered the prints. But as this side of the business is growing, I got the printer so I can instantly test out ideas. And we have many. Now besides buildings, we are also offering 3d maps and other models for museums or educational institutions.

?

There is a service, called Touch Mapper, where you can enter any address or geographic coordinate, and it will print out a 3d map of the surroundings. I always wanted to try it out, but now it was the great opportunity. I put it to the test, you can read about my findings.

?

Another thing I’m more involved with these days is languages. I thought about my journey of learning languages, when I started out a few decades ago, all I had was a few braille books and teachers. These days so much more is possible with technology, but it is not without challenges. I outlined a few challenges and solutions of learning a language without eyesight.

?

A while ago I wrote about Dave Wilkinson, who is planning to be the first blind man to complete Race Across America, tandem biking coast to coast. The race starts on June 11. Follow Dave and Jim on Facebook!

?

I heard Dave speak yesterday, he was such an inspiration. If your organization is looking for a great speaker, I’ll be happy to make introductions.

?

If you have any questions about accessibility, you can book a meeting with me.

?

If there is anything you would like to read about, or if I can help your organization, please reach out and let me know.

?

Have a great weekend:

?

Tom
