In Ontario, we have a lot of clients talking about AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005, S.O. 2005) compliant maps and apps. I thought I'd share a few resources for those looking for information on how to create Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and AODA compliant GIS applications.
- Accessibility is part of ArcGIS is a great blog article by our own Director of Technology and Solutions for Esri Canada, George Kouroupis.
- The latest article in ArcNews (Fall 2019) talks about how Accessibility Is a User-Focused Endeavor.
- We also published a full webinar on Visualizing Your Presentations with Esri Story Maps:
Client Applications
Our clients are always presenting at our annual User Conferences including:
- City of Ottawa - Municipal web mapping and AODA compliance
- Ontario Ministry of Environment and Climate Change - Using ArcGIS Online to Release an AODA Compliant Application
While more and more of our users are using configurable application templates vs. developing their own applications from scratch, we also feature a blog for "There's An Accessible App Template For That"
Partner Applications - Geocortex by VertiGIS
And of course, some of the best AODA compliant apps out there in the marketplace include our partner VertiGIS and their Geocortex platform. Their accessibility features in Geocortex Essentials are second to none.
Another success story from the Ontario Government featuring the GIS Centre of Excellence at the Land and Resources Cluster:
"Rather than building accessibility-compliant mapping applications from scratch, the GIS COE has been able to take advantage of out-of-the-box functionality to meet legislated requirements while also achieving substantial cost savings."
