We often don't know how to address people with disabilities and in ignorance, we can hurt someone. Today, I am sharing a few best practices for writing inclusive content :

  • Focus on abilities and not limitations

Example: A person who uses a wheelchair rather than wheelchair-bound

  • Refer to the person first and the disability second

Example: Use person with a disability, people with disabilities rather than disabled person and the diasabled

  • Do not use language that portrays the person as lacking something

Example : Use person with a brain injury rather than brain-damaged. Burn survivor rather than burn victim.

  • While describing people both without disabilities and with disabilities, do not include words that imply negative stereotypes of those with disabilities.

Example: Use people without disabilities rather than able-bodied, normal, healthy or whole.

  • Mention someone's disability only when it is essential to the story

Example: It's not important to share that the person is of small stature if the focus of the story is on how smartly they resolve team conflicts.

How do you keep your content inclusive? Do share in the comments.
