Access Monash Faculty Experience - Model UN

Access Monash, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, and The United Nations Association of Australia, Victoria Division (UNAAV), proudly hosted a Model United Nations for Access Monash partner schools, as part of our work to increase the accessibility and understanding of higher education for students from underrepresented backgrounds. The event took place on Wednesday, May 17, attracting 80 students from nine schools.

Focused on the topic of Zero Hunger: Addressing Global Poverty and Universal Food Security, the Model United Nations provided an exceptional platform for these bright young minds to explore the intricate dynamics of international relations and its profound connection to global poverty and food security. Demonstrating dedication and commitment, these students devoted considerable effort for this event, having begun their diligent preparations early in Term 1. There is perhaps no better example of this dedication than by one of our newest partner schools, Echuca College, making the 4 hour drive to make the 9am start time.

Throughout the day, the students eagerly engaged in spirited debates and thought-provoking discussions, embodying the essence of the United Nations. Assuming the roles of diplomats representing diverse nations, they skillfully navigated simulated scenarios, proposing innovative solutions to combat poverty and achieve universal food security. With one of the passing resolutions including the UN calling upon wealthy developed nations, who have not already joined the World Food Programme, to invest 1% of their Gross National Income to help aid the accessibility of food around the world.

The collaboration between Access Monash, the Faculty of Law, and UNAAV played a pivotal role in the resounding success of this event. This joint effort not only provided students with a platform for intellectual growth but also nurtured a deeper understanding of global issues and the significance of diplomatic negotiations.

The Model United Nations showcased the remarkable dedication, critical thinking, and negotiation skills of the participating students. Witnessing their unwavering enthusiasm and passion as they tackled complex geopolitical challenges was truly inspiring. This event served as a powerful reminder that today's youth possess extraordinary potential to shape a more promising future for our world.
