Accepting the Turnings

I’ve been working my way through a book called “The Fourth Turning”.

It basically says that nations/civilizations go through the seasons of life in the way that nature does or that humans do.

The challenge is being able to identify not where you are in life (if you’re 50, you’re in the late summer), but where your civilization is in its cycle.

Then, the next challenge is being able to identify what to do…followed by doing it.

The hardest part, it seems to me, of all of this, whether in life or civilizations is simply accepting that this is the way of the world.

The ancients talk about this, but the moderns prefer to think about continued, linear, upwards progress.

That’s not how it works.

Things return to their origins.

Today’s the first day of school for kids in my area. It’s also an overcast day.

Summer’s over.
