Acceptance of Cannabis in India

Acceptance of Cannabis in India

For centuries, all the Ayurveda acharyas have been using cannabis (Vijaya) for treating various diseases. The Herb, known internationally as Indian Hemp, is found in various regions of the country.

There is a reference regarding research by Great legalization Movement India Trust which states that cannabinoids(alkaloids found in cannabis) help in tackling the adverse effects of Covid -19.

India is a country, where the cultivation, production, manufacturing, and medicinal use of cannabis can not be banned completely as cannabis has religious and cultural importance in India. In the Festive seasons, it is used as 'bhang'. According to the spiritual beliefs of Indian hindus, cannabis has been used by Lord Shiva for medicinal purposes in various forms. Therefore, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS)Act has been challenged to declare cannabis medically beneficial.

NEED FOR LIBERALIZATION IN LAWS

Recently, HEMP got recognition through the FSSAI license and found attention in the food industry. With more liberalization in laws, the future of the Hemp industry seems quite bright.

For the INDIAN SYSTEM OF MEDICINE, it will be a boon if the medicinal use of cannabis is encouraged by the government. It would be a blessing for many patients suffering from psychiatric problems, indigestion, etc.

According to ayurvedic texts, Vijaya has digestive, sleep-inducing, pain relieving, brain calming, and muscle relaxant properties.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

According to scientific research, cannabidiol(CBD) and tetra hydro cannabidiol(THC) are two vital chemical ingredients present in cannabis.

CBD & THC act on the endocannabinoid system of the body and enhances mood, the appetite of the body, makes sleep sound and boosts up memory, relieves anxiety, depression, and pain disorders. Post - chemotherapy complications like nausea and vomiting are also relieved by CBD.

Reference of Vijaya is found in various Ayurvedic Granthas - as Samhitas, Samgraha grantha, Chikitsa grantha, Rasa grantha and Nighantus.

According to Atharva Veda and Ayurveda, cannabis as a single herb or as an ingredient of 191 ayurvedic formulations can cure about 29 diseases after undergoing various processes.
