The '80s marked a cultural renaissance that left an enduring impact on the nation and beyond.

In this edition, we're going to explore the awesome music, distinctive fashion, and unforgettable films of the 1980s. We'll also dive into the dynamic world of gaming, take a ride through the realm of popular cars, and relive everything that contributed to the remarkable essence of this era. Just like Doc Brown once said, "Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads." But this time around, we're trading in the DeLorean for Bill and Ted's iconic phone booth, all set for a most excellent adventure.

The Music Scene: New Romantic to Post-Punk Rock

Ah, the 1980s, a golden age for music diversity in the UK. The music scene flourished with a plethora of genres that captured the hearts of the nation. The New Romantic movement was in full swing, led by iconic bands like Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, and Culture Club. Their flamboyant fashion and synthesized sounds mesmerised audiences across the country.

At the same time, the punk rock spirit from the late '70s continued, with rebellious bands like The Clash and The Sex Pistols challenging the status quo and giving voice to the discontent of the times. Amidst the emergence of post-punk, new wave, glam rock, and a range of formidable hard rock groups, the era also prominently featured a roster of well-established rock and roll icons.

Bands like Guns n Roses, Motley Crüe, Poison, Metallica, and Red Hot Chili Peppers caused a stir and worked their way into the music industry. However, we cannot forget the pop icons such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, and Prince. The Eighties provided an abundance of musical brilliance that we still enjoy today.

Fashion Forward: Making Bold Statements and Style Icons

Oh, one cannot discuss the '80s without mentioning the fashion! It was all about self-expression and breaking conventions. Neon colours, bold patterns, and flashy accessories defined the era's aesthetic. These paired with shoulder pads, leg warmers, and the famous "big hair" became iconic symbols of the decade. Mullets were in, and the smell of perming solution and hairspray impregnated the air. The punk and New Romantic scenes greatly influenced fashion trends, with many daring individuals embracing unconventional styles that defied societal norms.

The punks had their hair spiked and shaved. They impressively stayed upright and in tact with the use of sugar and water, soap, gelatine, or even pva glue! Dressed in tartan, leather jackets and leopard print, with studs and safety pins galore! Everyone stamped their feet with Doc Marten boots and couldn’t care less what people thought. New romantics however, adorned lavish material such as satin, velvet and silk. If it wasn’t frilly and regal, it wasn’t worth wearing. Style icons like Boy George, Adam Ant and David Bowie lead the trend and quickly these elaborate outfits were worn at specific London clubs like Blitz and St. Moritz, which were the acknowledged establishments where the new romantic movement found its beginnings. It was this decade that Madonna also took the world by storm, with her daring fashion sense… I mean who could forget that iconic Gaultier gold cone corset bra! They all inspired a generation with their unique and unforgettable looks.

No discussion of 1980s fashion would be complete without acknowledging the iconic shell suit! Keeping in line with the penchant for vivid and neon hues, these tracksuit-style garments were crafted using a blend of cellulose triacetate and polyester, resulting in a glossy exterior. Their pinnacle was attained in the mid-80s, only to swiftly transition from being pretty cool to pretty naff come the 1990s.


Cinema: A Decade of Blockbusters and Iconic Films

Lights, camera, action! The UK cinema industry had its time to shine during the 1980s, producing an array of unforgettable films. Iconic franchises like James Bond and the adventurous tales of "Indiana Jones" were born during this time, captivating audiences worldwide. British actors such as Sir Anthony Hopkins and Dame Judi Dench earned international fame and contributed immensely to the country's rich cinematic legacy.

Who could possibly forget the cult classics that graced our screens throughout this remarkable decade? From the time-travelling DeLorean of "Back to the Future" to the coming-of-age classic "The Breakfast Club," not to mention the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man of "Ghostbusters" and the spine-chilling brilliance of "The Shining," the '80s presented us with an eclectic mix of cinematic wonders.

Adding to the excitement, we were treated to the eagerly anticipated continuation of the Star Wars saga with "The Empire Strikes Back." This instalment delivered one of the most monumental plot twists as Darth Vader revealed, "Luke... I am your father!" It stood as one of the darkest chapters in the series and became a fan favourite. Our cinemas and living rooms were graced with a diverse range of genres and boundless talent, leaving us thoroughly awestruck and entertained throughout this incredible era.

Gaming & Tech:?

The '80s truly marked a pivotal moment in gaming history, shaping the way we interact with technology and entertainment. It introduced us to iconic gaming consoles like the Nintendo Gameboy and NES, as well as the Spectrum and Commodore 64. We were gifted with the likes of Tetris, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders. Absolute iconic games that are still loved today! the 1980s also gave us the epic tech showdown between VHS and Betamax, captivating the world with the battle of video formats. But it wasn't just gaming consoles and video tapes; technology was taking over our homes too.

During this exciting era, the introduction of the BBC Microcomputer was a game-changer. Packed with a plethora of useful software, it became a sought-after piece of technology. Simultaneously, Apple also played a crucial role, providing the Macintosh 128K, a family-friendly computer system that appealed to users of all ages. It provided games such as Crystal Quest, Hacker, and Shufflepuck Café.

And, of course, how can we not mention that beloved Italian plumber. In 1985, the first-ever Super Mario Bros. was released, marking the beginning of a franchise that still holds a special place in our hearts to this day. Mario became a household name, bringing joy and excitement to countless gamers worldwide as different variants of the game were released. We have Super Mario Party, Odyssey and Maker, not forgetting Mario Kart, alongside so many others, cementing his status as a gaming legend.

So much so, that in 2023 we saw him shine on the silver screen, the latest Super Mario bros movie was a box office smash hit! In just five days, the movie achieved an incredible feat by becoming one of the highest-grossing video game adaptations of all time, while also securing its place as Illumination's most successful release to date.

The 1980s Automotive Boom: Innovation and Iconic Models

The automotive industry thrived with excellent innovations. Cars evolved into the recognisable vehicles we still drive today, albeit not as stylish as today’s offerings. IT was within this decade that the introduction of four-wheel steering added newfound manoeuvrability and stability. Ford's popular models like the Escort, Fiesta, and Sierra, along with Vauxhall's Astra, Cavalier, and Nova, left a lasting impact on car enthusiasts, making the '80s an exhilarating time for automotive history.
