Accelerating Sustainable Change Through Digital Transformation: Green Growth for All
Tectona Group
Change management organisation using quality data to accelerate digital transformation and green growth in Africa.
Today, we reflect on the profound impact of digital transformation, particularly in accelerating green growth across Africa's diverse society and economy. In recent years, the continent has witnessed an unprecedented surge in technological advancement, granting its populace unparalleled access to information and resources at their fingertips. Nurturing a digitally transformed society is no longer a choice but a necessity for ushering in sustainable change.
Digitalisation has fundamentally reshaped the way businesses operate, leveraging digital tools to make informed decisions, automate systems, and ultimately propel initiatives towards success. In line with this vision, we have fervently championed efforts to digitise operations in pursuit of sustainable change. Our collaboration with the Association of Startup and SMEs Enablers of Kenya (ASSEK) entailed supporting the Digitisation of Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) processes under the BMZ/GIZ Global Digital Transformation Centre Kenya programme. Through this initiative, we provided capacity building support to over 45 Entrepreneur Support Organisations (ESOs) in Kenya on digitising MEL processes within their organisations. The ripple effect has reached a network of startups, Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs), and grassroots innovators supported by these ESOs across Kenya.
Establishing robust MEL structures within organisations becomes indispensable for the success of programme initiatives. In Africa, we have actively supported Food Security for Peace and Nutrition Africa (FSPN-Africa) in setting up their MEL system to monitor and evaluate in-country digital transformation indicators for the Digital Agriculture Africa (DAA) project - an initiative supported by BMZ/GIZ Smart Development Fund, and implemented alongside Mercy Corps Agrifin. Additionally, we guided FSPN through organisational change management to adopt and adapt to MEL processes for effective and efficient programme design and implementation in their quest for digitalisation in the agricultural activities amongst the smallholder farmers within the underserved communities.?
At grassroots level, digitalisation emerges as a formidable tool for empowering underserved communities; facilitating business growth, improving access to financing, establishing job-market linkages, and disseminating best practices information. For instance, for Mshamba, smallholder farmers constitute a vital asset within their communities, catering to the nutritional needs of locals and holding the potential to achieve higher yields and margins. Through precise MEL processes, we have supported Mshamba in evaluating the gender transformative indicators in agricultural technology solutions. This has enabled them to discern how their digital platform is positively impacting the lives of smallholder farmers across 14 counties in Kenya, with a specific focus on gender equity.

Our proactive involvement in digital transformation dialogues across Africa has fostered collaborations with like-minded stakeholders within the local ecosystem, all dedicated to green growth and sustainable change. Initiatives such as the Launch of the Digital Transformation Center (DTC) by BMZ and the EU underscore a collective commitment to steering Kenya toward a sustainable, human-centered digital economy and society. Key events in the ecosystem like the GovStack Roadshow and the Launch of the Guide to Green Data Centers supported by the BMZ/GIZ Global DTC programme have contributed significantly to discussions on digital transformation and sustainable data practices within the ecosystem. These conversations have spurred a wave of commitment toward driving sustainable change.
In light of this momentum, we make significant strides in developing the melbox - a digital platform for designing, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting changes and the impact of sustainability, green growth, and digital transformation indicators and solutions in Africa. The melbox empowers individuals and organisations through innovative tools for promoting digital transformation, green engineering, and green businesses.
