Accelerating Solar Energy in Ireland
Bridging the Gap to Meet 2030 Targets
In a competitiveness report delivered to the European Central Bank (ECB) last week, it was stated that Ireland has some of the longest timelines in Europe for completing solar projects. In The Future of European Competitiveness, Mario Draghi, former President of the ECB, outlined key bottlenecks for the uptake of renewable energy in Europe.
In the publication, Ireland was spotlighted for processes lasting more than three or even four years for ground-mounted solar along with Greece, and Spain.?
The report outlines the key challenges that arise from National and European environmental legislation which result in complex requirements in impact assessments of projects for the construction and operation of renewable energy installations. Grid permitting also comes under fire within the report, with a need to improve processes and speed to deploy the renewable solutions that enable decarbonisation.?
Such findings are consistent with the conclusions of other energy leaders within the space. In a report released earlier this summer, Cornwall Energy Insights found that delays in the planning process and a shortage of grid connections are among the main reasons why Ireland will miss its requirements of 80% renewables by 2030 by two years.?
Greater responsibility from the grid needs to be taken to enhance competitiveness and reduce emissions. At a recent competitiveness conference with the IDA, Enterprise Minister Peter Burke warned that investments into the grid will fall short of Ireland’s growing appetite for energy with its simultaneous need to reach Net Zero by 2050. Both optimising planning processes and updating investment into grid infrastructure are vital for both competitiveness and environmental obligations. Reaching the 80% renewable energy target is achievable by 2030 – but it will require prompt and decisive action from stakeholders across all levels of society.?
