Since dental implants were invented, many methods have been used to promote osseointegration. However, nothing works better than UV-photofunctionalization. It reduces the surface hydrocarbon to 15-20% and restores hydrophilicity. UV-photo functionalized implants accelerate osseointegration, and the strength can be up to 3 times greater during early-stage healing. The problem is that UV-photofunctionalization takes anywhere from 12 minutes to 48 hours using the current UV technology.
That's about to change.
DIO Implant and UCLA School of Dentistry have co-developed the next-generation UV technology called VUV-powered activation. By exploiting a cutting-edge vacuum, UV (VUV) light with a 172 nm wavelength combined with an innovative synthetic quartz technology — dental implants can now be activated in just one minute. On top of that, the 1-minute VUV activation has been proven to produce the maximum effect ever generated.
The research done by UCLA also uncovered that VUV-activated implants and healing abutments are biofilm phobic. It also showed that VUV-activated machined titanium and healing abutments promote fibroblast attachment and function, establishing a novel way toward an anti-bacterial soft tissue seal. This is an exciting discovery. Nevertheless, the 1-minute VUV-powered activation is expected to become the new norm of multi-purposed, most innovative technology within implantology. Now it just takes a minute to ensure osseointegration. That's one minute worth taking.
