Accelerated Learning in the Workplace - A Willingness for Experimentation Will Unlock Growth

This blog was written in collaboration with Erika Robertson, my team-of-two partner!

In today’s fast-paced workplace, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: those who succeed are the ones who know how to learn. In the first? blog, we explored the importance of accountability in learning, then dove into "how to learn"— But what does learning really look like? It often means being willing to venture beyond our comfort zones, embracing discomfort, and experimenting. Let’s explore how we can harness the power of experimentation to grow both personally and professionally.

Facing the Blank Canvas

Learning can be intimidating—like standing in front of a blank canvas, uncertain of what to paint. This uncertainty, however, is where creativity is born. By embracing the unknown, we invite new possibilities into our lives. Think of artists who start their work with no predetermined outcome. They don’t shy away from the blank canvas; instead, they see it as an opportunity to create something extraordinary.

Just like an artist, we can approach our learning with a willingness to experiment, understanding that there are no guaranteed results. When we view uncertainty as an ally rather than an obstacle, we shift from a fear-based mindset to one of curiosity and growth.

The Power of Experimentation

The best way to learn is through experimentation—trying new things, making mistakes, and learning from them. It’s through these moments of trial and error that we uncover new solutions, refine our ideas, and achieve breakthroughs. Take a cue from some of the greatest innovators:

  • Thomas Edison conducted thousands of experiments before successfully inventing the light bulb.
  • Marie Curie ventured into uncharted territory to lay the foundation for modern science.
  • Walt Disney consistently experimented with animation techniques, pushing boundaries to create Disneyland.

These individuals didn’t shy away from risks; instead, they embraced discomfort as part of the process. They understood that progress often comes from a willingness to challenge conventional thinking and go where no one else has.

Challenge Yourself to Grow

To embrace experimentation, start by challenging yourself. Here are a few ways you can do that:

  1. The Bold Experiment Challenge: Choose an area where you feel stuck—perhaps public speaking or learning a new skill. Design a small experiment to push yourself beyond your comfort zone and take action within the next week. Reflect on what you learned from the experience.
  2. Daily Discomfort Challenge: For the next seven days, do one thing each day that makes you uncomfortable but offers potential for growth. Document how you feel before, during, and after to see how discomfort can lead to positive changes.
  3. The Innovation Experiment: Identify a routine task and experiment with a new approach to do it more efficiently. What changes did you make? What was the outcome? This will help you see the value of trying new ways to solve familiar problems.

Your Commitment

The key to growth is consistency—and that starts with commitment. Make a promise to yourself to embrace experimentation. Write down one specific experiment you will conduct this week and describe the first step you will take. By committing to step outside your comfort zone, you’re opening the door to new learning opportunities and setting yourself on a path to continuous growth.

The Journey of Learning

Learning is not about perfection; it's about progress. It’s about taking that first step even when you’re uncertain of the outcome. By pushing beyond what feels comfortable and safe, you allow yourself to experience the creativity and growth that come from experimentation.

The blank canvas may seem daunting, but it’s also full of promise. Are you willing to pick up the brush and begin your masterpiece?

As someone who is a life long leaner, it’s in my DNA to continuously learn, but having a strategy that aligns could be the key. Great post!!

Amen! I just told a recruiter to reschedule their existing meetings to make room for my limited schedule this week. I don't have time for 'meeting tag'.
