In life, many people strive relentlessly to be noticed, hoping that recognition might open doors to advancement—whether through preferment or promotion. But what sets these two apart? Promotion is often earned through tangible achievements, the measurable fruits of hard work. In contrast, preferment hinges on preference—sometimes linked to accomplishments, but often rooted in subjective biases. A boss’s preference may simply reflect whom they favour, regardless of objective merit.
In the spheres of politics and leadership, gerrymandering and self-promotion are all too common. People jostle to be seen, parading their contributions to score points and seize greater opportunities. Few resist the siren call of self-aggrandizement.
A Model of Steadfastness: The Story of Joseph
As a Bible scholar, I resolved years ago to model my life after Joseph, the ever-consistent man of the Scriptures. Joseph’s journey is a portrait of resilience and grace. Whether in his father’s house, the pit, Potiphar’s service, or the prison—forgotten despite his extraordinary gifts—Joseph remained steadfast. Destiny ultimately lifted him to the palace, but his character never wavered. He avoided bitterness toward his brothers, who sold him into slavery and resisted the seductive advances of Potiphar’s wife. His unwavering goal was to honour God and maintain a clear conscience, not to chase human approval.
I first understood how rare and important this virtue was over three decades ago when a benefactor wrote to commend me for holding on to my Christian faith despite numerous persecutions. As the saying goes, the butterfly that lingers longest on a flower gathers the most nectar. Even in today’s fast-paced, ever-changing world, the only acceptable transformation for me is growth—moving from good to better and better to best.
A Journey of Unwavering Loyalty
This principle of consistency has shaped my life profoundly. For nearly four decades, I have been an active member of the church I joined in 1989 playing several roles from assistant pianist, band leader, director of music etc to coordinating the Bible Study arm of the church for decades.
The one girl who captured my heart has remained its sole queen for over 30 years. To God’s glory, she’s the only woman I have known.
I am known to have celebrated the achievements of those who once looked up to me but are better in many spheres where I operate and have not been found wanting in humbly respecting those I’ve had the privilege of surpassing in life’s journey.
When the leadership of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) visited Ekiti State in March 2024 for the investiture of the Ado and Ekiti District President, I simply performed my duty as the state’s Chief Tax Officer. Personal recognition was never my focus, but rather a consistent commitment to my responsibilities.

The Unfolding of Unexpected Honors
Interestingly, my journey with CITN has been unconventional. Despite receiving an invitation to join the body and be inducted as far back as 1998, my official induction didn’t occur until November 2022 as I simply was not enthused. Interestingly, just six months later, I was surprised to be invited as the keynote speaker at the next induction ceremony. I tried to query, “Why me?” but realised later that it was a part of accelerated elevation! The leadership showered me with encomiums for good delivery despite the short notice.
The delayed induction meant that younger colleagues had already attained Fellowship status, while I was only beginning. One of my colleagues even queried me and asked how I could have become a fellow before her. How did I spend two years to achieve what takes 5 years to achieve?
I had to explain that I never lobbied for it. It was during the March 2024 visit of the leadership of the CITN that the Deputy Vice President (Mr Simon Kato) of CITN proposed to the Council President that I be considered for Fellowship. He remarked that my contributions as an associate member surpassed those of many seasoned Fellows. I marvelled at the suggestion: Just like that?
The surprises didn’t end there. I was later asked to submit my documents for formal approval. The Council President, Mr. Samuel Olusola Agbeluyi, graciously exercised his rare privilege, elevating me to Fellowship within two years of my induction—a special honour reserved for highly distinguished two members during his tenure. What a humbling privilege!
The Secret to True Elevation
Reflecting on this journey, I am convinced that the key to accelerated elevation is consistency. It is not the fleeting winds of preference but the steady compass of character that charts the course to greatness.
In an ever-changing world, the only acceptable transformation is growth—moving from good to better and from better to best. Consistency remains the foundation of enduring success and the cornerstone of every lasting achievement. When you consistently aim to exceed expectations, you don’t need special preparation for elevation. You don’t need any showoff. The Lord Himself positions you to be a cynosure, a city on the hills that cannot be hidden!
