Accelerate Your Job Search By Avoiding Fake Job Ads

Accelerate Your Job Search By Avoiding Fake Job Ads

It doesn't matter which side you're on, everybody hates fake news.

But if you're a job seeker, there's one thing worse than fake news ... fake job ads.

It's one of the dirty secrets of recruiting, almost all employers, and all outside recruiters post fake job ads. That's why about 30% of the job ads you see on job boards, and LinkedIn are fake ads. Companies even post fake ads on their websites.

So 30% of the time when a recruiter reaches out to you, and you get all excited ... it's for a fake job. You and the recruiter have a great conversation and they really liked you (then you get ghosted), because there was no real job.

This also means if you're applying to jobs online, you're definitely applying to fake job ads.

Here's why there are so many fake ads posted online:

  1. Outside Recruiters Have To:?Fake ads build the inventory of outside recruiters, and their business model requires just-in-time inventory of candidates. So 3rd party recruiters post ads for the typical types of jobs they often recruit, but it's a general, generic ad, because it doesn't represent a real position. When I ran recruiting practices for one of the world's largest recruiting firms, we were?AUDITED?each week, to assure we were running at least 10 fake job ads.
  2. Inside Recruiters Have To:?Internal recruiters have to build an inventory of candidates also. They also need just-in-time candidates, so they can minimize expensive outside recruiter and interim staffing costs, when they need to replace someone ASAP. Some openings just can't wait for ads to be placed, prescreening, and initial interviews, so recruiters pre-package candidates for emergency hire situations in many companies.
  3. HR Departments Have To Run Fake Ads Too:?HR departments need to report to government that their efforts attract candidates from all groups, including age 40+, unemployed candidates, from all races, religions, gender identities, and candidates from economically disadvantaged groups. They also have to interview enough of these candidates to show that they comply with hiring laws, creating a type of fake compliance interview (where the intention is to pump up their statistics, rather than hire the candidate).
  4. Hiring Managers Even Have To Run Fake Ads:?When a hiring manger or project manager creates their payroll/headcount budget for the next year, what do they do if they need someone with a different combination of?skills or job function they've never hired before? They do market research (or have the HR department do it for them), to determine market rates for the combination of skills they need. Guess how they do that research? Fake ads.

Fake ads are NOT to be avoided, fake ads are to be STOPPED and made illegal. It is a fraud to advertise false information. How did we come to accept this as normal? Shame.
