Each year, I interview over 500 mid to senior B2C leaders across various commercial functions – from general management to marketing, sales, e-commerce, merchandising, and more. These leaders have:

Yet, too often, their stories fall flat. Why?

Because they focus on career chronology rather than the impact they've made.

Why Does This Happen?

When asked, "Tell me about yourself," candidates often list their career history without highlighting their achievements. This approach doesn't help interviewers see the candidate's full potential or understand the value they bring.... and they lose the audience in the 1st 5 minutes.


Example of the Difference:

Chronological Approach:

"I've worked in the consumer industry for over 10 years. I started as an Assistant Brand Manager at XYZ Retail, then moved to ABC Consumer Goods as a Senior Brand Manager. I was later promoted to Marketing Director, where I managed a team of 12 people and oversaw national campaigns. Most recently, I became the VP of Marketing at FGH Brands, where I lead the marketing department."

Impact-Focused Narrative-Based Approach:

"Over the past decade, I've earned a reputation for driving innovative marketing strategies that deliver significant results. At XYZ Retail, I revitalized a declining brand by launching a digital campaign that increased online sales by 40% within six months. These are some of the specifics I did…“fill in the blank with action points”....

At ABC Consumer Goods, I was hired to turn around a declining megabrand. Hence I developed a data-driven brand repositioning strategy that helped us capture a 20% market share within two years. Convincing the team to embrace this new strategy was challenging, but I successfully won them over with these “fill in the blanks with action points”.

As the VP of Marketing at FGH Brands, I leveraged my deep category knowledge and leadership skills to create an omnichannel marketing plan that boosted customer retention by 15%. Some of the key action points I did include “fill in the blank with action points”.

These experiences have honed my ability to transform underperforming teams and find creative solutions to complex business challenges. I'm passionate about translating consumer insights into actions that drive both customer satisfaction and business growth."


Well, of course, we narrate it in our own language and tone of voice, most comfortable for us!

Remember, we only have the first 5 minutes to capture the interviewer’s attention. Many will also agree that the outcome of an interview is often decided within the first 10 minutes.

  • Craft a Clear Career Story: Outline your roles, the goals of each role, challenges, action points, and achievements. Provide context for your missions and share details on how you tackled challenges and delivered results.
  • Identify Your Unique Selling Points (USPs): Highlight the qualities that differentiate you. Are you an entrepreneurial leader or a problem-solver? Keep five USPs ready to show your value and embed them into your Career Story.
  • Be Consistent: Ensure your story shows a clear career trajectory so that interviewers see growth and impact.
  • Define Your Distinction: Why should employers choose you? Avoid corporate and internal jargon and focus on clear messaging.
  • Highlight Achievements: Link your achievements to your USPs, creating a cohesive and memorable narrative.
