The Emergence of Influenza

Influenza, is an infectious disease caused by influenza viruses. Symptoms range from mild to severe and often include fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pain, headache, coughing, and fatigue. These symptoms begin from 1–4 days after exposure to the virus and last for about 2–8 days.

Influenza research is wide-ranging and includes efforts to understand how influenza viruses enter hosts, the relationship between influenza viruses and bacteria, how influenza symptoms progress, and what make some influenza viruses deadlier than others. Non-structural proteins encoded by influenza viruses are periodically discovered and their functions are continually under research[1].

In a typical year, 5–15% of the population contracts influenza. There are 3–5 million severe cases annually, with up to 650,000 respiratory-related deaths globally each year. Deaths most commonly occur in high-risk groups, including young children, the elderly, and people with chronic health conditions. In temperate regions of the world, the number of influenza cases peaks during winter, whereas in the tropics influenza can occur year-round.

The Importance of Innovation in Pathogen Detection

Microorganisms are found everywhere and are more active during the winter season where the climate are colder. These harmful microorganisms are known as pathogen, and is considered as the major vectors/carriers for various communicable diseases. In OEM by QIAGEN, we help our partners to develop and customize unique solutions through microbe testing, pathogen screening, and environmental monitoring systems. We achieve this by providing our partners access to QIAGEN’s sample preparation and detection technology to unravel various pathogen and characterizing pathogen of interest.

In general, pathogens have diverse compositions, interactions and functions. PCR technology can identify these pathogen which are harmful for our health and our surrounding environment. The forefront of pathogen detection focuses on how these microorganisms negatively affect us by analyzing pathogen targets, monitor antibiotic resistance or identify the presence of virulence genes. As our OEM partners, your company will need reliable and advanced innovations for microbiome detection, identification and quantification.

Emphasizing the importance of pathogen detection, we at OEM by QIAGEN partnered with innovators like yourself to develop dedicated products and workflows to prepare for future pathogen outbreaks. Our global project managers help to simplify the complexities in OEM development in various DNA sample processing. Our technologies and expert teams will support you in every step of product development process and optimize the products for your desired sample types.
