Accelerate Action: Vicky Coakley’s impact on women and the community

This International Women’s Day, we’re taking a moment to celebrate Vicky Coakley, one of our pioneering Community Development Officers.

Raised by her mum in Limehouse, Vicky moved to Mile End when she first started working here in 1999. Since then, she’s spent the last 26 years making sure no one in our community is left behind. From developing inclusive community programmes, to helping women find jobs and supporting families in need, she takes action every day to create opportunities for local people.

Vicky’s impact

Her impact is huge, but it’s the small, everyday actions that truly show how much she cares.

For example, when Aleya*, a talented sports coach, struggled to return to work while caring for her sick child, Vicky found her a volunteer role to help rebuild her confidence. That small step led to bigger opportunities, and now Aleya has a full-time job.

Vicky also supported Henna*, who was out of work and struggling with her health. She encouraged Henna to take part in community activities to regain her confidence, and even supported her daughter during her A-levels. Vicky motivated Henna to volunteer as a community connector, supporting other local women to access services and programmes. She went on to help Henna and her friend successfully secure funding to run community programmes for Bangladeshi women and continued to provide references and help with interview preparation. Now, Henna has a job as a care assistant, and her daughter is thriving. This shows that support from just one person can change a whole family’s future.

More than a job

It’s clear Vicky doesn’t just work in the community – she’s part of it. Having grown up in Tower Hamlets, she understands the challenges local people face. That’s why she goes above and beyond to make sure that women, refugees, and struggling families have the support they need. Whether it’s helping someone clear their energy bill debts or making sure they receive the benefits they’re entitled to, Vicky is committed to making a difference.

When asked why she’s so generous with her time, she said:

“I believe in supporting people, because everyone deserves to lead a happy and healthy life. Life’s challenges can sometimes be beyond our control, but with the right help and guidance, we can navigate even the toughest crises.”

Vicky continues:

“If I ever needed help, I would hope someone would extend a lifeline to me. As my mum always said: ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,’ and that’s the philosophy I live by.”?
