ACCC Reaction & Speed
The ACCC yesterday came out and said they focusing on us telcos. One of the references they made was to stop the use of "up to" when referencing speed.
Today we demonstrated just how fast we can move as we have now introduced a new way of describing speeds on our NBN products.
Download Speeds:
(a) Between 5Mbps and 12 Mbps
(b) Between 5Mbps and 25Mbps
(c) Between 12Mbps and 100Mbps
Well done to my team at TPG, iiNet, Internode and Westnet for making it happen. Let's see how consumers and the rest of the industry react.
We expect there will be further changes down the line when official guidelines are published by the ACCC- this will force Telcos to reveal actual average peak speeds, per NBN speed tier.
I do hope that the government are able to fix the underlying NBN pricing model so that Australians can actually use the National Broadband for what it was originally intended - that is High Speed Internet!
Unless pricing at a wholesale level is addressed to encourage usage and speed, the NBN will continue to suffer negative press and reluctant adoption.
Since arriving in Australia more than 15 years ago, I cannot recall a week of so much negative social and media exposure for our industry. Perhaps it's due to the mass scale of the NBN role out and the ever growing size of the NBN user base?
We need to be patient as we go through this massive tipping point in Australian telecommunications history.
One thing I do know is that the Australian government has taken on the mighty responsibility of carrying the nation's fixed line internet traffic!
