ACCA P6 December 2017 Student Feedback
The P6 Advanced Tax December 2017 exam was very time pressured and according to feedback received featured the following areas:
Sole trader loss relief
Personal service companies
Non-domiciled remittance election
Group Relief
Takeovers with pre-acquisition losses
Rollover relief
Option to tax
IHT and CGT Implications of gifts with BPR, Gift and E. Relief
VAT on Exports Within The EU and Outside the EU
Intangible assets
CFC Exemptions and Tax Charge
Overseas Branch
VAT On Consultancy
Capital Goods Scheme For Partially Exempt Companies
Employee SIP
Fortunately, I covered all these areas on the Kaplan Financial Revision Course and the students who took the time to review the revision exam questions carefully and practice analysing the questions and writing out answers under timed conditions found that they were able to make a good attempt at the paper.
These are some of the actual anonymised comments I have received from my students which will give you a realistic idea of what the P6 exam experience was like.
‘Thanks to you I managed to finish the exam right on time and had a general idea of what to do. You are one of the best teachers in Kaplan if not the best’
‘I found the exam a little mixed. There were some parts which I felt I was able to do well and others not so sure. I think a lot of it was down to me understanding what the examiner was asking under time pressure. '
'Overall, I thought the exam went ok. I enjoyed parts of it and other parts not so much. I quite enjoyed the paper and I felt that the methodical approach and set piece rules in tax are much clearer and much more precise (rather than airy-fairy P1 and P3 stuff). I’d like to take this opportunity and thank you for all your efforts in class. I thoroughly enjoyed your course. It had the right balance of fun and hard work. This was my first course in London and the 2-hour train journey was worth it. I will say I found this the hardest of all the P papers (P1, P2 and P3) but a part of me would feel a little pang of disappointment as I would know that I won’t be attending your course again.’
‘It was time pressured because of the writing. Also, a lot of information in the questions to digest compared to some past exams in my opinion. It was heavy on overseas tax, I thought. But let’s see if I managed to pick up the easy marks. Also, the three optional questions posed a problem as they were all equally as difficult. Thanks for your help and fingers crossed for a pass’.
‘A very big thank you for your effort to support our learning and help get us through this tax exam. It was truly a great experience to be, and take part in your class, the focus, push, toughness, at times fun and encouragement. This indeed was serious business! The examination yesterday was very challenging, tough and tricky, seriously time pressured but some bits were okay! I spent most of my time trying to read to understand the question in both one and two and finally picked it up by focusing on the manager's requirements. That guided my answers, although I could not say that I got them all right. I managed to attempt and completed 3 questions, (questions 1,2 and 3) and I think I did quite well or really did my best on the questions I answered, and I believe it's enough to give me 50 marks for me to pass. It would have been nice to attempt all 4 questions but it's tough and time pressured. I am not a quick writer.’
I will be writing a detailed article analysing the exam in detail as I receive further information.
