Academic Versus Practical

As much as I was hoping for rain overnight, it simply wasn't meant to be, so hopefully there'll soon be rain clouds on the horizon. If we don't get any rain these coming days, I'll likely have to be watering my garden again, just so those young plants can get a good start.

When I arrived at office this morning, I proceeded to get finished-up on my end of the month accounting and bill-paying, and not long after I was finished, I happened to notice one of the demolition workers over at the Kirk site, so I walked over and had a nice chat with him. The bulk of my conversation, was centered around the stellar job his company had done in getting that burn-out tore down and scraped-off, and by the end of today, all the black dirt had been delivered and leveled-off, so likely tomorrow, they'll be removing all that fencing around its site, just so the tenants at the Manor will be able to have their parking lot back. Most likely there'll be another contractor who'll be power-planting grass seed on that site.

Once it was light enough out, I grabbed my camera and headed out to my new listing, just to get loaded up on interior and exterior photos, which I later posted online for all to see. There's already two appointments to show it tomorrow, so I'm hoping it'll be under contract before the end of the week. I'm still thinking the buyers are going to be elderly, and only because there's a step-in shower, along with the laundry being on the main floor. Of course that three-season's room is where I'd be planted during our pleasant summer evenings. It would also be a great place to enjoy and early morning cup of coffee.

After getting my new listing fully disseminated out into the cyber-universe, I headed over to my favorite lumberyard, to get some additional materials ordered for my new project. While there, I had a very good visit with one of my favorites, and out of that conversation, I learned a few more things about the goings-on in our not so fair at times, City. After getting an ear-full, I was reminded of several conversations I've had with my dear friend regarding there being a multi-generational black cloud of juju enveloping our City. I know it sounds terrible when saying, "Once one devil's either flown the coop or got screwed into the earth with a left-hand screw, there's but one more sprouting-up to take his or her place."

I grabbed a quick lunch and then headed out to get some errands run, and then making a quick stop at a home that's being renovated. As I was looking things over, I was reminded of an article I'd read not long ago where it talked about academic versus practical, which I found not only interesting, but exceptionally true, and only because I've been out in the trenches for more years than I want to admit, that's when there'd become a full understanding of the difference.

On a near weekly basis, I encounter someone who 'claims' to have expertise and know-how when talking about just the general things like gardening, structural components, design and appeal, musical skills, timing, planning, accounting and the list goes on and on. Well, I've come to the unfortunate conclusion that if someone hasn't had a smidgen of practical experience, then I'm turning a deaf-ear to whatever I'm being told. I actually don't give a hoot about how many accreditations or degrees someone has, because that's all academic which hasn't been tried and tested in the real world. Why do you think interns in hospitals have some of the hardest lessons to learn when dealing with real human beings who're in need of 'practical' health care?

Now you're really going to think me wicked when saying one of the first things I look at when first meeting someone who's 'supposed to be' in the know about practical applications, are their hands, which upon closer look, speaks volumes. Keep in mind, I don't pay much attention to the hands of bodybuilders, and only because they've created false impressions of being 'hands-on' workers.

I dare not mention names, but there are people both you and I know, who have hands and fingers appearing to've never done any practical physical work with them over entire lives. And no, stuffing food down one's pie-hole isn't practical experience, but rather chronic gluttony.

What bothers me immensely, is when seeing people in seats of power, laying down laws which they've likely clipped and pasted from something they've read online, and believing they're doing something that's good for all. No so I say, because they've likely never had to self-start themselves each and every morning, and the only reason being, they'd not learned long ago, that if you don't work to maintain and sustain one's livelihood, then no one else will, which brings me full-circle to the point where I'm convinced there are people attempting to steer our community in directions they believe positive, when in fact it's having an opposite effect, and only because they're classic examples of the Peter Principle, and only because they can't and won't look at the practical side of things. Just today, I was reminded how broken our system has become, and mostly due to the evils of meritocracy.

I just found out several days ago, that the three-storied building on the corner of N. Federal and 2nd St. NE, was sold to the woman who owns Simply Nourished. I actually sold that building about ten years ago to the owners of Jaspersen Insurance and Real Estate. It's the building where our Muslim community holds their religious services in its basement, and one storefront where the chiropractor just recently moved out of, and also the offices where there are child psychologists. I'm now curious over her plans.

Tonight's One-liner is: Find your voice, and then inspire others to find theirs.
