PROCRASTINATION :?
????" Procrastination is like a credit card; it's a lot of fun until you get the bill." -?Christopher Parker
????Every single human being does procrastination to some extent. You are procrastinating the moment you start thinking _"I'll do it later"_- and what a great feeling it is.
????It's one of the biggest challenges students run into, especially with online learning.
????Virtual classes provide less structure, accountability, and time pressure...all of which make it much harder to stay focused and manage time effectively.
????So, it's no surprise that procrastination has been a bigger challenge than ever for students who have been trying to learn from home during the past years.
?????Procrastination can have many different causes, so if we want to help students overcome it we first need to figure out exactly why they're struggling so we can find the solution that will work best for them.
IT'S ALL ABOUT EMOTIONS
????If you're reading this article, you're more likely a serious procrastinator who is trying to understand and fix the problem. Interestingly, even though you realise this, it is impossible for you to stop doing it. Rather than poor time-management skills, there is something innate that keeps you trapped inside the procrastination vortex.
????Actually, latest work has shown that time-management has nothing to do with this phenomenon, so telling a procrastinator to "stop wasting time and simply do it", is like urging a depressed individual to "stop worrying and cheer up".
????Why is this the case? The root cause of procrastination is a failure to properly regulate emotions at a point in time. When you face a significant task as a procrastinator, it goes like this:
????? You realise that delaying it is harmful
????? You focus on making yourself feel better in the present moment
????? This desire takes over completely
????? You postpone the task?
????? You hope for the best in the future
WHY DO STUDENTS PROCRASTINATE?
????Students often procrastination because they don't see how a project is relevant or important to them, don't understand the material, or just don't know how to get started. When you boil it down, procrastination is a combination of motivation, confidence, and comprehension issues.
EFFECTS OF PROCRASTINATION ON STUDENTS & SCHOOLWORK?
????Procrastination can have a negative effect on students' schoolwork, grades, and even their overall health. Students who procrastinate experience higher levels of frustration, guilt, stress, and anxiety--in some cases leading to serious issues like low self-esteem and depression.
????The effects of procrastination can have an bigger impact on high school students. Once students reach high school and start receiving more take-home assignments and larger projects, students who procrastinate until the last minute tend to recieve lower grades than their peers.
????This can create a cycle of bad grades and low self confidence that can be difficult for students to overcome. At a time when marks starts to impact the post-secondary opportunities for students, this can lead to a lot of extra stress and frustration.
