An Academic CEOs Vision

A Vice-chancellor needs vision, understanding of the university culture and passion to develop the university .Vice Chancellor is changing, towards becoming a CEO of a complex modern university in an increasingly competitive environment. Vice-Chancellor should be a distinguished educationist or eminent scholar in any of the disciplines or professions, with a high standing in his/her field and adequate administrative experience. Strategic management, Managerial and fund-raising ability may outweigh the traditional skills previously seen as important.

The Select Committee for the  should comprises of reputed academicians,Industrialists who does not have personal knowledge about the Vice Chancellor candidate.The Committee should analyze the potentials of the candidate in the technical,managerial,administrative cum excellence in all fronts of executing the functions of the VC in a non-partisan attitude.The Selection Committee should be entirely free from politicians formula,biasing and favoritism in any form.A Ombudsman has to be appointed until the selection of the VC is approved by the Committee.The VC selection for the unitary university as an affiliating varsity acting as a parent body of 540 colleges is a major task and the vaccum can be filled from the pool of international standards of academicians/industries.

The VC as an academic CEO in the midst of the economic surge has the lot of role to play as an intellect.Only academic and professional distinction, rather than consideration of factors like caste and political affiliation, will now determine who gets to be a vice-chancellor of universities. There will be only one nominee from the university in the three-member panel.The member has to be a director of a national level institute like the IIT, IIM or winner of 'National /International award' in Technical education. The second nominee would be a retired judge of the High Court or Supreme Court appointed by the governor and the secretary of the department would be the third member on the search committee. The governor's nominee would head the panel.Vice-chancellor is one who "shapes up the personality of students in line with national and social priorities.

As the foreign university entry to India stands in the pipeline,there is stiff competition between the foreign players and reputed institutions.Bringing enormous corpus funds from the public private capitals will enhance the growth of the institution in all aspects.VCs must now possess a broad range of business competencies or skill sets as well as be exemplary academics. While the question may arise as to how candidates are identified and appointed to such complex roles, this research focuses on the selection criteria or constructs used to determine actual suitability. Recruitment and selection processes centre around such constructs, also termed skill sets or competencies, and are critical to successful outcomes..Recruitment base may have to be widened to get suitable appointees .The education ministry is also looking at training university heads and senior administrative staff in leadership and management. Strengthening mathematical sciences and physical sciences is the base for the engineering and technological institution in the lines of setting of fundamental research park. The learning approach has to be implemented so as the learners environment is more than the teachers environment.In the globalised world,social relevance technologies emphasis on the rural markets for the developing nations like India.The course content and curriculum must be revised every 2 years.Human factor engineering and professional ethics needs to be strengthened .Behavioural analysis,Counselling of the students,organizational behavioral studies have to be implemented in the course content for shaping the students with moral values. Technological and management institutions should strive for global level technical competency in all aspects and achieve placements for the students.

Management science levels integrated with the profound organizational behavior skills with analyzing powers should go in hand in hand.In a semester in the technology curriculum,the entire syllabi should be divided into one part as technical subjects and the remaining as how to groom as a excellent managers by including the management ethics.Students who are being admitted to the technical colleges even though they are meritorious are phenomenally jumping to the suicide points.They lack self confidence,patience and communication skills.Counselors have to be appointed in a full time or part time mode and students have to talk freely with them.A.In a week ,two or three classes have to be allotted to the counsel-ling hours which improve the confidence levels.It s vital for the in-takers of the students of such types to counsel them.There is a sharp decline in quality of higher education.Private varsities,self financing colleges where all have to come under a revamp of standard scanner.As large chunks of graduates passing from Private varsities,the question arises about the employability?

Knowledge per se is vital than grades and marks.Comprehensive exams have more weight age of their core areas and more or less on communication,psychometric and ethics skills.Candidates who cleared the exam with good grades have to practice as a Engineer.
