Abuse

Abuse is any kind of violence towards another person or animal that may result in physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional harm. Anyone can experience abuse, irrespective of their age, gender, race, or background.

Psychological or emotional abuse entails a person harming another person through a nonphysical form of abuse that impacts their mental health and overall well-being.

Financial or material abuse involves using someone's monetary assets or belongings to the advantage of the perpetrator through deception and threats.

Domestic violence is abuse that usually takes place among intimate partners and results in physical, emotional, or sexual harm to the other person.

Discriminatory abuse is a form of abuse that is most common and includes abuse because of race, sexual orientation, religion, intellectual disability, physical disability, gender, or other characteristics that cause harm to them or favor others in some way. This includes creating disadvantages, harassing, victimizing, or other actions.

Abandonment or neglect happens when anyone who needs care is abandoned or neglected by a person who was responsible for providing care.

The cause of abuse is not definite and varies from individual to individual, but abusive people are seen to have experienced some sort of abuse themselves. However, not everyone who abuses has been abused, and they might abuse due to their childhood experiences (or upbringing), personality traits, mental health conditions, or substance abuse.

The impact of abuse once again varies from one person to the next. However, some of the common impacts of abuse include complex post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, suicidal tendencies, and other related mental health conditions.

Abuse treatment is often a long-term intervention, including medical care for any injuries sustained during the abuse.

Trauma-focused psychotherapy is used to treat emotional and psychological harm or damage caused by the abuse. It is also important to enable and empower the affected individual by helping them learn certain skills and techniques that may enable them to develop healthy coping skills by managing their daily routine, which is seen as really important for recovery.
