Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway inaugurated

A new 62km-long highway, which connects Abu Dhabi to Dubai, has been inaugurated in the UAE.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Road begins at the end of Dubai’s Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and links to Abu Dhabi’s Sweihan Road via an interchange.

The highway was developed in line with the Abu Dhabi Urban Development Strategy (Capital 2020), following its launch by Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council (Abu Dhabi UPC) and subsequent update in 2015.

HE Falah Mohamed Al Ahbabi, director general of Abu Dhabi UPC, said: “The road, which is one of the biggest and most important infrastructure projects implemented by the Abu Dhabi government under the Surface Transportation Master Plan (STMP), represents a model for all future roads in Abu Dhabi.

“It is also in line with the objectives of Abu Dhabi Plan 2030 with respect to establishing a complete and connected transportation network that accommodates the emirate’s needs now and in the future.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Road passes through the Forestry Green Belt, Al Maha Forest, Khalifa Port Industrial Zone (Kizad), and Bida Khalifa.

It intersects with Al Ajban Road, bypassing Al Shahama, Zayed Military Camp, and the Al Falah area of Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi UPC developed the route in cooperation with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Transport (DMAT), Abu Dhabi General Services Company (Musanada), and other government authorities.

The highway is the result of multiple studies and methodologies, according to Abu Dhabi UPC. It has been designed to enhance economic, social, urban, and environmental development. Stakeholders also intend to develop existing and future neighbourhoods within the road’s urban growth boundaries.

“As a strategic artery, [the road] can absorb additional traffic, especially during peak hours,” added HE Al Ahbabi. “Providing an alternative to the current Abu Dhabi and Dubai main road, the new highway will alleviate traffic congestion and bring down the number of accidents.

“The new road also provides access to Abu Dhabi City and its international airport, as well as to Yas and Saadiyat islands,” he concluded.
