Abs's 5k run

"I am grateful to have another day"

Abs Njie started as a receptionist at our Elite Athlete Center and Hotel and shortly got promoted to Duty Manager. He has been with Imago Venues for 4 years and battled cancer for 2 years and won.

Abs was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in August 2020 at just 26 years old. It was a scary and devastating time having lost his mother to breast cancer when he was a child. Abs said “My mum losing her life because of cancer gave me the fight to beat this and be positive towards it”

?During the height of the COVID pandemic, Abs was going to scans, blood tests and treatments all by himself. Starting Chemotherapy in October 2020 all the way to Christmas, he had a lot of mental barriers to push through.

We asked Abs how he remained so positive throughout the treatment and self-isolating. "I was a positive person before the diagnosis, and once I received the diagnosis it was scary. But I had the right people around me, my partner, family and friends all supported me. Once the Doctor said I had a chance, I took that and stuck with it to keep me going”

From diagnosis to remission, to relapse and finally to full remission! It has been an emotional rollercoaster for Abs.

On Saturday the 10th of September 2022, Abs is running 5k to raise money for Macmillan. Talking to Abs, he chose Macmillan because “the Macmillan nurses were there to help from the start. Available on the phone 24/7. I promised myself when I get better, I am going to give back”

5k was the perfect way to raise money because Abs’s consultant advised him to get back into exercise as part of his recovery. Starting with the Move charity for home workouts and physio to get his strength back, then using the couch to 5k app. Abs is well on his way to running 5k for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“My ultimate goal is to raise awareness of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma; it can happen to anyone at any age. People need to look after themselves because it helped that I was healthy and fit before I was diagnosed”
