Preparing for another trip up to the Granite City, I find myself looking into the options for travelling the 325 miles from home to hotel on Sunday evening:
? Drive for 7-8 hours, £30-40
? Walk/train/stand/train/walk/train/walk for 11-15 hours, £200-240
? Drive/fly/taxi for 3-4 hours £180-195
Guilt about the impact of flying means I go through this process every time I make a long journey. But looking at key information makes the decision depressingly easy - especially when friends are visiting for the weekend, increasing the value I assign to my time.
Decision making is easier with the right information, presented in an understandable way.
But it takes work to acquire and filter information so that we can use it. There's lots of other factors I could have considered:
? Personal safety
? Contribution to climate change
? Risk of baggage loss or damage
? Quality of coffee in train stations/motorway services/airport departure lounges
? Energy required to stay cheerful whilst emptying my belongings onto a conveyor and being patted down by a grumpy security operative at the end of their shift
? You get the idea...
... and hopefully see what I'm getting at.
Are you giving yourself and your colleagues access to the right information to make decisions?

5 年Richard, I know exactly what you mean as I go through this process regularly. I must admit I generally drive partly because a) it feels like there is less impact than flying or going by train but mainly b) it gives me the flexibility to leave whenever I finish rather than having to wait for hours in an airport or train station to get to somewhere near my house where I then still have to get into my car and drive to home.?
