ABCD with CARE: AnyBody Can Detect Breast Cancer

In the realm of women's health, few topics are as crucial yet often overlooked as breast cancer detection. At CARE Hospitals, we're on a mission to change that narrative. Our innovative ABCD approach – Any Body Can Detect – is revolutionising how we think about and practise early breast cancer detection. Let's delve into why this matters and how you can be part of this life-saving initiative.

The Stark Reality:

Breast cancer has emerged as one of the most common cancers affecting women worldwide. In India alone, one woman is diagnosed with breast cancer every 4 minutes (study by Globocon 2020). But here's the silver lining: when detected early, the survival rate for this cancer type can be over 90%. This statistic isn't just a number; it's a RAY of hope, a call to action, and the very foundation of our ABCD programme.

The Art of Self-examination:

  • Visual Inspection: Stand before a mirror with your arms at your sides. Watch out for any changes in breast size, shape, or colour. Raise your arms and look for the same changes.
  • Lying Down: Lie down on your back & place a pillow under your right shoulder. Use your left hand to examine your right breast and vice versa.
  • The Pattern: Use the pads of your three middle fingers to feel for lumps. Move in a circular pattern, covering the entire breast and armpit area.
  • Pressure: Use light, medium, and firm pressure to feel all breast tissue.
  • Nipple Check: Gently squeeze each nipple to check for discharge or lumps.

Remember, consistency is vital. Perform these checks monthly, ideally a few days after your menstrual period ends.

Why ABCD Matters:

  • Empowerment Through Education: Equipping individuals with knowledge and skills puts the power of early detection in people's hands.
  • Breaking Barriers: The ABCD method is all-inclusive, dismantling cultural, social, and economic barriers to breast health awareness.
  • Cost-effective Prevention: Self-checks are a free, accessible way to monitor breast health, making early detection possible for everyone, regardless of their financial situation.
  • Saving Lives: Simply put, early detection saves lives. The earlier breast cancer is identified & treated, the better the chances of successful outcome.?
