The ABC of Motor Insurance Claim
By Zippy Musyimi, Founder of Powerhouse Insurance Agency Ltd.
It was a sunny morning and Jane (not her real name) didn’t have anything to worry about. She hopped into her car and set off for work after putting her children on the school bus. The traffic was slow but moving, the other drivers were probably planning their days like her, the police were manning traffic in their usual special way and the morning show on radio was her gentle companion. Then BOOM!!! Her car lurched to the side and off the road, missing a pedestrian by inches and ended up in the ditch. She sat unmoving for a moment not sure where she was only to be startled by knocking on her window and someone trying to open her door.
She tried the door and it opened, fresh air shocking her and giving her back her voice, ‘Oh my goodness!!! I have just been hit.’
How often have you found yourself or someone you know in this position? So you have good insurance and you get involved in an accident? What next?
Here is what to do:
· Get yourself and others to a safe place
· Check for injuries or fatalities
· Call your intermediary, give a brief report of what happened, details of the other vehicle, registration, insurer, and type of insurance, driver details, driver’s license and ID number.
· Take photos of the scene of the accident, the damaged areas and capture the registration number(s)
· Call the police or report to the nearest police station and record a statement but do not accept liability. Ensure you obtain a Police Abstract report by capturing the correct details of the accident.
· Give these details to your intermediary and complete the claim form provided
· The intermediary will pick up the matter with the insurance including towing, garage, assessment and repairs.
