ABANDONED PROPERTY

ABANDONED PROPERTY

On Saturday September 17th 2016, I participated in a photowalk sponsored by Redbull international and Diamond Bank tagged #Redbullphotowalk. The organisers felt it will be good to explore Lagos from one spot and they chose the 25 storey Defence Building also known as the Independent Building. It is the first skyscraper in Nigeria, which formally was completed in 1960. It is the Nigerian equivalent of the Empire State Building in New York. As a photographer, I considered the choice a brilliant one because it allowed us to see Lagos like we never had, a fuse of history and elegance. But it was sad to observe that this national pride has been allowed to waste and become a hide out for hoodlums and criminals.

My thoughts has been on that property and why it was abandoned. It looks like what has not been in use for more than 20 years.  My question since that day has been what kind of country abandons such huge edifice and for what reasons? Does it have structural problems? Then pull it down to avoid catastrophes. Does the government have for details visit:https://philipsakwari.com.ng/2016/09/22/abandoned-property/
