AAROGYA SETU IS NOW OPEN SOURCE: Efforts Bring Some Results

Ministry of Electronics & IT through Press Information Bureau (PIB) notification dated 26th May, 2020 has informed that Source code of Android version of Arogaya Setu has been released under Apache License Version 2.0. It further informs that iOS version will also be similarly released within two weeks. In doing this, the government is on the right track.

Undoubtedly, open source is a better policy, yet the government was only paying lip service to it. It never acted on the same.

As a judge, I have been advocating open source and implemented it in the Allahabad and Chhattisgarh High Court but the E—committee and other courts ignored it. It was in later years that the E-Committee realised its importance and imitated Allahabad High Court example. Though, while adopting video conferencing application, the other courts have yet to follow Allahabad and Chhattisgarh High Courts. They are wrongly advised to adopt proprietary option rather open source one. Allahabad and Chhattisgarh High Courts have adopted Jitsi, an open source solution.

Nevertheless, the government continued its love affair with proprietary software. This shift in government’s policy to adopt open source is a welcome sign. I hope that they will push it in schools, colleges and start working in open source.

I have been delivering lectures at law colleges, management institutes, engineering colleges, and conferences about open source; making them aware of its importance. At least now it is bringing some result.

Its title ‘Given Enough Eyeballs, All Bugs Are Shallow’ is self explanatory. It shows the biggest advantage of open source and this is the reason, why the government has not only made it open source but has also announce award of one lakh for finding bugs in it.
