In this Q&A, Sachi shares insights into the impact of her upbringing in Japan, her involvement in the AAPI Colleague Resource Group (CRG) and valuable advice for young AAPI professionals navigating their careers. Dive into her story below.
How has your cultural background influenced your experiences and perspectives in both your personal and professional life?
I was born and raised in Japan. We are taught to treat others with respect the way we want others to treat us. This value has influenced both my personal and professional life.
What inspired you to join the AAPI Colleague Resource Group (CRG), and how has your involvement impacted your sense of belonging at BPM?
The AAPI CRG helps me understand the similarities and differences among the various AAPI cultures. Learning about our similarities and differences has helped me build better work relationships with colleagues and become a better person. It's a very safe space to ask questions and share the experiences we face because of cultural differences.
Could you share some of your favorite events or initiatives organized by the AAPI CRG?
We have bi-weekly meetings and spotlight members of our AAPI CRG. We share our experiences and cultural differences. It has given us a great opportunity to learn about cultural diversity within the Firm.
What advice would you give to young AAPI professionals who are just starting their careers and may face unique challenges?
Embrace differences and appreciate your own heritage. Certainly, we face various challenges, but I believe embracing, accepting and understanding our differences makes us better human beings.
