HAVE YOU EVER FELT COMPLETELY EXHAUSTED, OVERWHELMED AND LACKING MOTIVATION DUE TO THE DEMANDS OF YOUR LIFE?
If so, it could be that you are experiencing EMOTIONAL BURNOUT.
Emotional burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress or unresolved personal issues; resulting in a limited ability to manage your emotions adequately. It can hit anybody - young or old, male or female, in the workplace, in the home, from any nationality or ethnic background.
If this is you, you are not alone. According to the World Health Organization, over 130 million people around the world suffer from burnout. Unchecked, emotional burnout can lead to feelings of depression, frustration, restlessness, and lack of focus. It can also strain your relationships with loved ones, strain your job performance, and decrease your overall quality of life.
So what are the signs of emotional burnout?
? Feeling emotionally drained, unable to maintain your usual level of interest or enthusiasm
? Loss of energy and fatigue
? Increased irritability and frustration
? Difficulty concentrating or retaining information
? Loss of interest or motivation
? Excessive worrying and/or unhappiness
? Withdrawing from social relationships and activities
It’s important to recognize the signs of emotional burnout and take action. Here are some steps to help:
? Take time off – This can be hard if you’re feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, but it’s one of the most important steps to take. Give yourself permission to take a break and just focus on yourself. Don't forget to set and keep boundaries for your self-care.
? Exercise – Physical activity is an excellent way to blow off steam and reduce stress levels. Especially if you exercise with others as this also promotes a sense of belonging and support at the same time.
? Get adequate sleep – Lack of sleep can cause stress levels to spike and make emotional burnout worse. "Good sleep hygiene is the rock on which everything else depends!" - Ali Gordon.
? Improve your communication – Practice active listening and positive communication with those around you to promote understanding whilst maintaining healthy and strong relationships.
? Spend time with your emotions – Recognize your emotions and learn to respond in a non-judgemental manner. Seek help with this if necessary.
? Strengthen your support network – Make sure you have your Formula 1 "Pit Crew" (a network of supportive individuals) around you. Reach out to them for emotional support.
? Seek professional help – If emotional burnout is affecting your life in a major way, it’s a good idea to get help from a professional.
There are a number of ways to deal with emotional burnout and it’s important to find the one that works for you. The most important thing is to take care of your mental health and remember that you are not alone.
Emotional burnout can be extremely overwhelming and exhausting; however, with intention and commitment, it is possible to manage your emotions and cultivate a sense of well-being.
