In the ever-evolving realm of technology, I remain excited to share that Africa isn't left behind, thanks to A2SV 's dedication to extending tech impacts to the marginalized parts of the world.
The heartbeat of A2SV's Generative AI for Africa Hackathon is a life-changing journey that recognized dreams across 47 African countries. From its virtual inception in August to the upcoming in-person Grand Finale in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, this hackathon symbolizes hope for the digital revolution Africa rightfully deserves.
The innovation and collaboration, reflect our collective progress and vision for using tech to transform lives in Africa. This wasn't just another tech event—it is a story of hope and progress.
Impact Beyond Code: Nurturing Africa’s Future Leaders?
As we moved from the virtual start to the Grand Finale in Addis Ababa, the impact of the Generative AI Hackathon extended far beyond code.
It was about nurturing the very essence of Africa's future tech leaders. To the students involved, I say this: Your brilliance and innovation have shaped not just your destinies but the destiny of our continent.
Out of 47 countries, we selected the top 8 teams for the Grand Finale, with champions from 6 African countries. I use the term 'champions' because of the resilient spirit these students have. Despite facing internet challenges, connection issues, and adapting to teamwork in different spaces, they persevered.
A Bridge to Innovation: Connecting Dreams to Solutions?
The hackathon served as an important bridge, connecting dreams to tangible digital solutions. The projects emerging from this were innovative and potential game-changers for Africa. To the teams of these projects, I extend my deepest admiration. You weren't just coding; you were architecting the future.
A2SV's Ongoing Commitment to Education and Innovation
When I founded A2SV Foundation, our dedication to education became an integral part of our mission. We discovered willing students with incredible talent, and all that was required was the necessary resources to progress to stage 2, where we focused on building digital solutions for Africa.
The Generative AI for Africa Hackathon stands as an event and a testament to our relentless commitment to shaping a brighter future for Africa. Our outreach touched over 3,700 African students, generating more than 500 project ideas. This encourages us to carefully assess areas ready for A2SV Foundation branches and estimate the impact we can make.
From Semifinals to Grand Finale: A Continent United?
In my last newsletter, I did mention that we were in the intense semi-finals. To me, this was a celebration of unity.
The hackathon became a heartwarming connection of dreams. Seeing students from different corners of the continent come together in Ethiopia, forming genuine connections, and becoming part of our A2SV family was nothing short of inspiring.

Shaping Africa's Future: The Grand Finale Showcase?
We held the Grand Finale from November 11-13 to allow a showcase of the finalist projects and to show Africa's potential and a real-life experience for the early startups.
In our pursuit of shaping Africa’s future, we sought external expertise, bringing together a distinguished jury panel from Turkey, the US, and Ethiopia. This panel, including Prof. Ricardo Baeza-Yates , Director of Research at the Institute for Experiential AI, Northeastern University; Prof. Jelani Nelson , an Ethiopian-American Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences at UC Berkeley; Alper Gü?er , Managing Partner at Poligon Interactive | TR in Turkey and A2SV Head of Communications; and Solomon Kassa , a Tech Strategist & Advisor and TV personality in Ethiopia, played a crucial role in providing fair judgment during the pitches and inspiring our students.
Witnessing these amazing projects not only captivated the jury but also resonated with our commitment to positive impact. To Google , our invaluable sponsor, I extend my deepest gratitude. Your support is not just sponsorship; it was a vote of confidence in Africa's tech potential and the results, numbers, and projects that came out from this are social proof.
Your Invitation to Shape Africa's Future
The hackathon allowed the finalist students and A2SV Core Dev teams to pitch and present their demos to the grand jury, get critical feedback, and have a chance to pitch to in-person and remote investors. The finalist 9 projects and 5 Core Dev projects show potential and investors are still welcome to partner with us on this.?
