9th Volume: How Design Goes Beyond the Physical Environment

In this week’s newsletter, we’re highlighting what effective outreach looks like; taking concepts out of computers and into real life; and the importance of rehabilitation. And as a bonus, we’ve included a few recent articles from our employee-owners.

1. Celebrate Engineering: Encourage, Innovate, Collaborate, and Contribute

For this year’s Engineers Week, Associate Julianna Burke showed us what effective outreach looks like. She writes, “We’ve learned that developing the next generation of engineers is a two-step process.” Read her insights on how and why outreach goes beyond the classroom.

2. Design Culture: Driven by our Values

Our #design culture is shaped by the voices of our employee-owners. Every year, we take time to recharge, reexamine, and rethink collaboration as an integrated firm, and how this is conveyed in our work – because there is always room to improve. In our 2022 Annual Report, we share what we learned over the last year and how it's applied to our design work moving forward.

3. Teaching Digital to Physical: Geometry Games

"Today, complex geometries take shape in #digital modeling software without requiring knowledge of the underlying geometric principles," says Associate Matt Conway. In an exercise with the University of Southern California, students in the Master of Architecture program took fantastical structures out of the computer and into our Los Angeles studio. Bridge the knowledge gap between form and construction with Professor Conway.

4. Beyond the Building: Advocating for Equity in Justice Design

How can designers influence family function and human connection in rehabilitative programs? Senior Associate Joanna Wozniak, AIA, explores how we can remove barriers in rehabilitation, creating more equitable, healing, and transformative spaces.
