9/9/24 How to make a grown author cry

Hi!

There are a few things that can make a grown author cry:

finding a typo on the back cover of a published book (?),

realizing you've made an ineffective business choice (?),

oh, and finally understanding the power of an author's email list (?)

only to realize I've been doing it wrong. ??♀?

The best day to have started building your email list was ten years ago. The next best day is today.

For years, all of the goo-roos preached about "building your list" but it took me way too long to get my act together. In some ways, I'm still doing that (thanks for your patience).

I've finally figured out my game plan and putting the pieces in place is a fun game.

At least that's how I'm choosing to look at it.

(As opposed to viewing it as the equivalent of climbing Mt. Everest.)

If you haven't started building your email list, regardless of the status of your book or empire, I suggest you start today. Here are a few pointers:

• Think long-term when you choose the platform. I started with Aweber but moved to ConvertKit because it has all of the functionality I need for every aspect of my empire (note: changing platforms = extra unnecessary pain and suffering--choose what you'll need later, not what you need right now). • Study copywriters and copywriting so you can write your own emails authentically. Sure, you can hire someone to create your content, but that's way less fun and effective.
• Do something every day to build your email list, just as you do something every day to market your books and your business.

The good news is you don't need (or really even want) a huge list that's unresponsive; you want a list of people who love getting your emails, read them, and can't wait for the next one. Plus, the listen to your advice and take action on your suggestions.
