Who would have thought that an innocent conversation, over a sarnie (sandwich) in my old back garden with my good friend JP, would result in sowing the seed of the idea of having my own podcast show.
Thank you to the 5065 people joining us, who all know being curious about conversations that count in business makes them unique to me; together we will 'Find & Speak'.
It's my mission to share conversations I have around running a business, be that start-up, scale-up or shake-up.
This week I'm reflecting on that little impromptu lunch in the garden back in the summer of 2020 where my good work pal and I were chewing the fat on ways to market ourselves.
My friend turned to me and said: 'You should have a podcast! It would be perfect for you considering what you do.'
But what on earth would I talk about?
Let's be real.
At the time there were plenty of shows with well known people hosting them on Sales, Marketing, Strategy, Business, Leadership, etc. etc.
How could I turn it into something different?
My friend got me thinking. I returned the favour with 'So should you!'. She had the perfect niche and has also gone onto be a fellow podcast host.
That very same friend bought me a birthday card two years ago with the words 'She believed she could, so she did' and written inside the card was sentiments along the lines of 'You're the only woman I know that simply does'.
Brought a lump to my throat then (and still does now. Bless her.)
But she is right.
When you know, it happens.
Have you found that to be true too?
But I suspect you're wondering how I got the idea for the format of the show and how it proves to be so popular?
You may not be surprised but it involves wine.
The best way to learn about wine, or podcasting, or anything new is
dive in
A little like how no one ever wants to admit they're not good at something so avoid it? Eventually it will hold you back.
So after my epiphany, reflecting on how my own business had changed over the years, I recalled one conversation with a stranger that changed my view of how I thought the world perceived my work.
It was that conversation that led to me becoming one of the small businesses to represent AXA UK in their 2019 brand campaign.
It was that conversation that led to me writing two articles for their blog page.
It was that conversation that led to me having photos taken of me at work.
It was that conversation that led to the conversations with the two London design agencies.
It was that conversation that led me to revamp my website and pull my socks up.
It was that conversation that led to my office being turfed upside down as they staged it when it was 3 degrees outside!
It was that conversation that led to...so many actions and emotions.
The point I am making is that this was a big deal to me.
How many other business owners have had something as momentous as this happen to them born from one conversation?
What other stories would we hear if that conversation hadn't happened?
Or because it did?
I was onto something and I couldn't let it go.
But, I had no idea how to record, edit or produce a podcast.
It was time to find someone who did. I found my Rimmz. We're now a tight team who are always looking to bring out the best through the conversations.
The lesson here is that I had no idea where it was going to lead.
But I took the lead.
What idea do you have ruminating that you could make a start with? I'd love to hear.
What would happen if you did? What would happen if you didn't do it? What wouldn't happen if you did? What wouldn't happen if you didn't?
For me, I have had 99 conversations on all kinds of topics, learning about areas of business that I knew little about, making changes once I knew what I needed to know.
Asking questions isn't as easy as you think if you don't already have the answers, right?
There's lots for me to celebrate personally from the conversations I have had with guests.
Yet one of the most poignant moments comes from receiving a Review from someone I don't know.
Or an unusual topic of conversation going viral unexpectedly because it's hit a nerve with listeners.
There's no sign of the show slowing down as I pledge to continue to bring guests that share 'How to' do stuff in the many areas of business.
I can only thank my guests and listeners.
Thank you for everything.
There are some changes on the way but the show is only going to get better as a result.
Time to celebrate with 99 red balloons...
