PREMIUM SUBSCRIBER QUESTION

A recruiter suggested I make my resume "more colorful" (literally—add more color so it's "visually engaging") and add "stars and sliders" (as in, if I were to add a "languages" section, the recruiter's recommendation was to do the following: English ?????, French ???, Italian ???, etc.

I had to tell the recruiter (very kindly but firmly) that I am not a graphic designer or in marketing, so making my resume more "colorful" is completely irrelevant.

What is your take on this?

You can do everything right, yet in the end, there's a high chance that it will all depend on the recruiter's subjective view and personal preferences.

In the past, I believed that a visually striking CV could help you stand out. However, with AI increasingly handling the first round of screenings, design complexity can be more of a hindrance than a help. AI systems, while improving, still struggle with intricate layouts, potentially overlooking key details if your creative CV. Your recruiter’s suggestion to add colors and sliders might appeal to a human, but it’s crucial to remember that your first "reader" may well be an algorithm. For now, clarity and simplicity in your CV's design are your best allies. They ensure that your qualifications are easily understood by both AI and human recruiters. In a world where AI is evolving, but not yet perfect, it’s safer to prioritize readability over aesthetics.

Feedback for Issue 94:l! Love to see it :) “All the wonderful tips from Issue #94 of Jobseeking is Hard that pertains to how to use LinkedIn when someone is currently working and searching for a new position are greatly appreciated! I'm going to share these tips with a woman that I previously worked with and is actively looking to find a new Customer Service position because of the company's toxic environment and can't afford to have them know she's looking.”
