Lance

Trey Lance will have season-ending ankle surgery today

Details:?Lance?broke?his right ankle in the first quarter of the 49ers’ matchup against the Seahawks.

  • The injury appears similar to the gruesome fibula fracture and ligament dislocation suffered by Dak Prescott two years ago.

Jimmy:?Lance was replaced by Jimmy Garoopolo, who led the team to a 27-7 victory.

  • Garoppolo ended up completing 13-of-21 passes for 154 yards. He accounted for two touchdowns (one passing and one rushing).

Incentives:?Garoppolo, who led the team to the NFC Championship Game last season, agreed to lower his base salary from $24 million to $6.5 million less than a month ago — but can earn up to $16 million in incentives now that he has regained the starting job.

Backup:?Rookie Brock Purdy (Iowa State) will become the No. 2 QB. The seventh-rounder made the team following a strong preseason showing.

Long-Term:?Garoppolo’s deal is up after the season, so Lance should return in 2023 as the starting quarterback — though the injury will have an impact on his development and could be a long-term detriment to his athletic mobility.

Suspensions

NFL will consider suspensions for Mike Evans and Marcus Lattimore

Background:?Evans and Lattimore were both ejected on Sunday after sparking a bench-clearing brawl (watch here).

Suspensions:?According to Mike Florio, the league will?consider?suspensions due to past incidents between both players.

  • Evans and Lattimore have shoved and or punched each other in nearly every meeting since 2017.

Not Worried:?Evans told reporters after the game that he does not expect to be suspended and said he only acted because Lattimore threatened Tom Brady and punched Leonard Fournette.

  • A video clip may or may not show former Bucs’ coach Bruce Arians?prodding?Evans to retaliate against Lattimore.

Impact:?With injuries to Chris Godwin (hamstring) and Julio Jones (knee), Tom Brady can’t afford to lose Evans for next week’s mega matchup against the Packers. A Lattimore suspension would be less impactful — as the Saints visit the winless Panthers in Week 3.

Tua

Tua Tagovailoa leads the league in passing yards after record-breaking performance

Details:?Tagovailoa set career highs with 469 passing yards and six touchdowns in the Dolphins’ stunning comeback win over the Ravens.

  • Dan Marino is the only other quarterback in franchise history to pass for at least 400 yards and five touchdowns in a single game.

Passing Leader:?Through two games, Tagovailoa has thrown for 739 passing yards — which is 89 yards more than the next closest quarterback (Carson Wentz).

  • Tagovailoa is also tied — with Wentz and Patrick Mahomes — for the league lead in passing touchdowns with 7.

Improbable:?The Dolphins are the first team since 2011 to win a game after trailing by at least 21 points in the fourth quarter. Prior to Miami's win, teams trailing by 21 or more were?0-711, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

More History:?Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle became the first pair of teammates to each record at least 150 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns in a game since 1991. They combined for 361 yards and 4 touchdowns.

1 & 2:?Hill (284 yards on the season) and Waddle (240 yards on the season) now rank first and second in the league in receiving yards.

On Pace:?While regression is inevitable, Tagovailoa is on pace for two single-season passing records — 6,282 yards and 60 touchdowns. On the receiver side, Hill is on pace for 136 catches, 2,414 yards, and 17 touchdowns and Waddle is on pace for 128 catches, 2,040 yards, and 26 touchdowns.

Trubisky

Mitch Trubisky trying to block out "KEN-NY! KEN-NY!" chants

Details:?Steelers fans chanted for rookie QB Kenny Pickett throughout the team’s 17-14 defeat to the Patriots.

  • When asked about the chants after the game, Trubisky said: "It is what it is. You just block it out and play football."

Poor Performance:?Trubisky completed 21-of-33 passes for 168 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. On throws traveling more than 10 yards in the air, he completed just 5-of-12 passes for 74 yards.

  • The offense as a whole totaled just 243 yards and scored only one touchdown.

Tomlin:?Mike Tomlin did not hide his displeasure with the offense after the game. Some in the local media are already calling for the?firing?of offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

Switch??The Steelers play the Browns on Thursday, which makes a switch unlikely — but another poor showing from Trubisky could lead to Pickett’s debut in Week 4… against a softer opponent like the Jets.

Standouts

Lions DE Aidan Hutchinson and Jets WR Garrett Wilson among Week 2 rookie standouts

  • He became the first Lions’ rookie to record 3 sacks in a single game.

Wilson:?Wilson, the No. 10 pick of the draft, caught 8 passes for 102 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Jets’ thrilling win over the Browns.

  • Wilson is up to 12 catches for 154 yards on the season.

London:?Drake London, the No. 8 pick of the draft, was a standout for the second consecutive week. He reeled in 8 passes for 86 yards and his first career touchdown in the Falcons’ loss to the Rams.

Dotson:?Jahan Dotson, the No. 16 pick of the draft, caught 5 passes for 59 yards and a touchdown. Through two weeks, he leads all rookies in touchdowns with 3.

Doubleheader

MNF Doubleheader: Bills favored over the Titans; Eagles favored over the Vikings

Details:?The Bills are favored to beat the Titans by 10 points.

Week 1:?Buffalo dominated the Rams in the opener, while Tennessee suffered an embarrassing defeat to the Giants.

Last Year:?The Titans defeated the Bills 34-31 last October. In that game, Derrick Henry rushed for 143 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 20 carries (7.2 ypc).

Davis:?Bills WR Gabe Davis is questionable (and reportedly?unlikely?to play) due to an ankle sprain — which he suffered in practice on Saturday. If he misses the game, Jamison Crowder and Isaiah McKenzie will be in line for increased targets.

Eagles:?The Eagles are favored to beat the Vikings by 2.5 points.

Week 1:?Philadelphia topped the Lions in a high-scoring Week 1 affair, while the Vikings breezed past the Packers.

Health:?Both teams will enter the game in near-perfect health. The matchup’s most notable injury is that of Vikings rookie corner Andrew Booth — who is likely to miss the game with a quad issue.

Start Times:?Titans-Bills starts at 7:15 PM ET on ESPN. Vikings-Eagles starts at 8:30 PM ET on ABC and ESPN+.
