9/11: The Power Of Unity Over Division

Remembering...

Twenty-one years later, I remember the September 11th events so vividly.

My heart sank as I approached the building of the torture rehabilitation center, where I worked with survivors from over 100 countries. In a split second, everyone's safety was jeopardized, while for some, it was for?the?second or third time in their life.

I could see fear, profound sadness, and undeniable pain on everyone's faces. I could see concerns and worry in addition to?a?million questions that we all desperately wished to have answers for.

In?the blink of an eye, 2,977 innocent people lost their lives.

Numerous civilians in all stairwells, numerous burn victims are coming down. We're trying to send them down first ... We're still heading up. ~ Patrick "Paddy" Brown, New York City Fire Department Captain

Fast forwarding twenty-one years later, I had the privilege and opportunity to hear perspectives not only of the September 11th, 2001,?event but the current state of our nation during the Colorado Remembers 9/11 event at the University of Denver hosted by Jared Polis, Colorado Governor.

?To hear the first-hand take from the national security forum experts, John Brennan, former CIA Director,?and John Bolton, a former National Security Advisor and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, was a tremendous opportunity.

Understanding historical moments and decisions, or lack thereof, accumulated to the chain of events we are seeing today.

Unfortunately, the global landscape does not look good at the moment due to the plethora of complex, competing, and conflicting issues, such as the invasion of Ukraine.

As a result, we are more divided globally than ever, failing on the leadership level to do the right thing vs. self-serving short-term objectives.

Sadly, the current landscape in our country might feel the same.

A common theme that keeps coming up more than ever is a painful awareness of the "magnitude of division and?divisiveness" that we should not ignore for much longer.
