Last weekend I had an assignment in New York. One thing I knew for sure I had to visit the 9/11 memorial.
It was 6 years ago I was in New York for the last time, when there was still plenty of building and I was so curious how it had become. But it was also back in time, the last trip I made with my parents. We peep through the holes of the fence, to catch a glimpse, but there was nothing yet to see. Meanwhile, my mother died and made going back to this place even more special.
Arriving at the conscious place, it almost took my breath away. What was it beautiful and special. Not only the place of the Twin towers, but also "the Oculus" that guard the spot with spread wings, like an angel.
If you have plans to go to New York, then I can certainly recommend you to pay a visit to this place, to reflect on the tragic event and to enjoy beautiful architecture.
The Oculus
The Oculus was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. The shape of the white building, a construction of steel and glass, according to him refers to a bird that rises from a child's hand. It is meant as a monument for the victims of the attacks. In the roof of the elliptical hall (100 meters long and 35 meters wide) there is a hole through which daylight can reach the platforms below. Every September 11th the sun shines through the hole at exactly 10.28 hours, a reference to the moment when the last tower fell on 9/11. (bron NOS)
