90% of Earth's Extra Heat is Absorbed by Our Seas – prepare your fleet for the new IMO’s Mediterranean ECA

Over the summer, news of rising temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea made headlines, and now the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued a new resolution introducing a Mediterranean Emission Control Area (ECA), stated to come into effect on 1st May 2024.

According to VPS Veritas, “The Commission claims that by limiting the sulphur content to 0.10% within marine fuels, or use an exhaust gas cleaning system, the Mediterranean ECA, will eventually cut sulphur emissions by almost 80% and particulate matter by 25%, providing considerable health benefits to the environment and improve human health”.

The purpose of this new #ECA is twofold: firstly, it aims to reduce overall emissions from marine vessels travelling through these waters, and secondly, to contribute towards tackling climate change. This new rule is an important step forward in regulating shipping traffic to protect our seas and reduce global emissions.

Those who work in or regularly travel through these areas need to be prepared for this rule coming into force in just over one years’ time. #Aderco can help with the transition – our fuel conditioners can reduce emissions for those looking for reliable solutions with emission reduction properties. We also have extensive knowledge about what goes into making modern ships compliant with this rule change and how to support this transition. For example, Aderco L1050 increases the lubricity of less sulphur-based fuels which will affect many merchant vessels as well as #Cruise vessels.

It is clear that taking decisive action now is key in ensuring we safeguard our shared planet from future damage due to excessive emissions from marine vessels.
