90 Days of Data-Driven Optimization: My WHOOP/ChatGPT Journey & Unlocking Fat Burn with VO2 Max

For those joining my journey for the first time, this is an update following my initial 60-day experience article where I shared how I’ve been using WHOOP and ChatGPT to optimize my health. In this 90-day update, I’m building on those insights with new data from tests like VO2 Max and RMR to take my fitness and metabolic health to the next level.

The Role of WHOOP in My Journey So Far

WHOOP continues to be a central part of my health optimization strategy. Over the past 90 days, WHOOP has helped me refine key aspects of my performance. By monitoring strain, recovery, and sleep, I’ve been able to avoid overtraining and better understand my body’s responses to stress and recovery.

  • Strain & Recovery: By adjusting my workouts according to my daily recovery scores, I’ve been able to improve my fitness without overtraining. My HRV trends are showing positive improvements, indicating my cardiovascular system is adapting well.
  • Sleep Performance: My sleep quality dropped slightly this month, but WHOOP’s insights helped me adjust my pre-sleep routine and improve my REM and deep sleep, which are essential for recovery and performance.
  • Heart Rate Zones: Monitoring my heart rate zones has been critical for making my workouts more efficient. Knowing when I’m in the fat-burning zone versus the cardio or muscle-building zone has allowed me to optimize my workouts for my specific goals.

New Data: VO2 Max and RMR Testing

I recently introduced VO2 Max and Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) testing to get a clearer picture of how my body functions during exercise and at rest. Here’s what these tests revealed:

  • VO2 Max Test: This test measures how efficiently your body uses oxygen during exercise. It provided me with the exact heart rate zones I need to hit for fat-burning and muscle-building, allowing me to structure my workouts much more effectively. This has been a game-changer, as I can now train smarter, not harder.

  • RMR Test: My RMR revealed that I burn around 1,590 kcal/day at rest, which is slightly lower than average. This means I need to be mindful of my caloric intake, ensuring that I’m not under-eating while still fueling my body appropriately for optimal performance.

Expanded Usage of ChatGPT: New Questions and Prompts

Throughout this journey, my ChatGPT-powered personal assistant has become an indispensable tool. In addition to creating personalized nutrition and training plans, I now use it for everyday health-related questions and quick assessments before visiting my doctor.

Daily Questions and Health Monitoring

  • Prompt: “Analyze my WHOOP data for last month and suggest adjustments to my workouts.” Usage: Balances training intensity and recovery based on WHOOP reports.
  • Prompt: “Given my VO2 Max test results, should I focus more on steady-state cardio or HIIT for fat loss?” Usage: Tailors workout recommendations based on uploaded data.

Doctor Visit Prep

  • Prompt: “Summarize my recent blood work to highlight potential concerns I should discuss with my doctor.” Usage: Provides quick health summaries before medical appointments.

Product Assessments

  • Prompt: “Is this product (upload photo) suitable for my diet and health goals?” Usage: Informs decisions when purchasing new supplements or foods.

Friend Conversations

  • Prompt: “What’s a simple way to explain the benefits of VO2 Max testing to a friend?” Usage: Simplifies complex data for casual conversations about fitness.


New Findings and Key Takeaways:

  • Optimized Fat Burn and Muscle Building: By knowing the exact heart rate zones I need to hit for fat loss and muscle gain, I’ve been able to optimize my training sessions and see faster results.
  • Better Sleep Recovery: WHOOP’s sleep data continues to be invaluable in refining my nighttime routine, helping me make subtle changes that lead to improved recovery.
  • Improved Metabolic Health: Managing my insulin resistance has become more precise as I integrate bloodwork insights with my WHOOP and ChatGPT data, resulting in more stable blood sugar levels.

According to a study published in the Journal of Sports Sciences, optimizing VO2 Max can significantly enhance fat oxidation during exercise, aligning perfectly with my experience over the past 90 days.

The past 90 days have been transformative. As I continue to refine my training, diet, and recovery based on my data, I’m excited to push my performance even further. My next steps involve improving my cardiovascular health, optimizing fat loss, and further fine-tuning my sleep quality for better recovery.
