- Leave the office on time - set a time that you will leave the office no matter what! Once the time comes, stop checking emails, get off the phone, close the business meeting.
- Weekends are for family - There is plenty of time during the week to get what needs to be done, done. Weekends should be a time when you can switch off and connect to the one's you love the most.
- Set autoresponder emails - If it's family time then keep it family time. Checking and responding to emails is disruptive. You can have an autoresponder set to say something like "Hi I check my emails periodically between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Outside these hours I am spending quality time with family. Thanks for your patience and understanding!"
- End meetings on time - Schedule your appointments/meetings earlier on in the day so you don't get stuck working late hours.
- Delegate tasks - Write a list of all the things you currently do at work. Then circle the things you think only you can do and nobody else. Try and delegate the rest so you can focus more and not get overwhelmed.
- Spend less time on unproductive activities - It's amazing how we think we don't have enough time in the day. Yet if we had someone time all the unnecessary activities we do during our day (like peeking at facebook, idle chatter, countless coffees ...) we will be amazed at how much time we waste. Time we could be spending with family.
- Never miss family dinner time - it's just such a special time of the day to connect with your loved ones. If you have to come home just to have dinner and go back to the office then so be it. You won't regret it and your children will never forget it.
- Get a Telephone Answering Service - Yup I thought I would stick that one in there ;) Let someone else answer your calls whilst you spend quality time with your family.
- Remember - that when you lay on your death bed (at a ripe old age of course) you won't regret spending more time at the office. You will regret every single minute you didn't spend with the ones you loved.
I wrote this to remind myself what's important in life. I hope it inspires others. Please share if it did.
