9 ways to be a great boss

9 ways to be a great boss

Our MD Kelly Allison shares 9 ways that can help make you a great boss.

Be flexible.
In this day and age we don’t need to be confined to a desk between 9am and 5pm to be productive. If the sun is shining, why not close the office early and let your team take their work to finish off from their garden. One of the great benefits of using cloud servers!

Keep moral high.
Rewarding your team doesn’t always need to be financial. Find time to show appreciation of their work, take them out to lunch at the end of a tough week or just give a small gift to say thank you.

Boost confidence.
Let someone know when they’re doing a great job and encourage them when things go wrong.

Open communication.
This is key to a happy team. Keep things as honest and transparent as possible including where you see the business going and any possible hurdles you face in the process. When you get the communication right, it’s amazing how honest your staff feel they can be.

Scrap the hierarchy.
You don’t need a pyramid structure on a day-to-day basis. Treat all employees as you wish to be treated yourself. You’re all working towards an end goal so go towards it together as a team.

Be ready to learn.
Learning happens all the time, in every company, in every role. Don’t assume that because you’re the MD, you know everything there is to know. You can learn a lot from those around you and vice versa.

People are humans, not robots.
Don’t assume that a one procedure fits all approach works. We all have different personalities and life challenges outside of the office - ensure your team always feel supported.

Who wants unpaid overtime? No one.
Don’t expect overtime. It doesn’t lead to a productive workforce if your team is tired and exhausted. Everyone has busy lives outside of work and life is too short to waste those extra hours at work. You never know - this refreshing approach may encourage your team to want to put those extra hours in off their own back.

Be yourself...
...But be happy and confident. Your team need to feel they have clear leadership that they trust to lead the company in the right direction. Passion and determination will shine through and keep your team motivated and happy at work.

Thanks. Yes, I totally agree Kim - would be nice for more people to enjoy going to work and have the flexibility we all need in our lives!

A refreshing outlook with a lot of common sense! If only more people would follow this example!
