Here are 9 tips to consider when conducting a skills assessment for the purpose of migrating to Australia.
If you're considering moving to Australia as a skilled migrant, it's probable that you'll need to undergo a skills assessment. Being aware of the process can help you save time and money by ensuring that your application is well-prepared, increasing the likelihood of a successful outcome.
VETASSESS carries out skills evaluations for various professions and trades, as well as offers expert advice to those considering applying for skilled migration. To assist applicants, we have compiled a list of our 9 most valuable tips.
1. Choosing the right occupation
The most challenging stage in the skills assessment process could be selecting the appropriate profession. This involves evaluating your abilities against the Australian standards applicable to the profession you choose, which assess several critical factors, such as your level of education, work history, including the duration spent in your field, career progression, and how your qualifications and work experience satisfy the occupation's requirements.
2. Know your job category and how you fit into it
It's important to understand your job category and your place within it. This may not be immediately clear, as your qualifications and job performance may differ from what is standard in Australia, even if it was the norm in your home country. Our evaluation of employment roles is based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO), which outlines the necessary qualifications, employment experience, and skill level for each occupation. It's crucial not to underestimate the requirements of your occupation category. For instance, in professional occupations, practical experience or a senior role alone may not suffice if you do not possess the necessary qualifications specified in our criteria.
3. If you don't qualify for an occupation's specific requirements
If you don't meet the specific requirements for a particular job, don't lose hope. There could be other alternatives available. Australia evaluates over 360 occupations, so even if you work as a scientist but don't qualify for that job in Australia, you might still be eligible to apply as a skilled migrant in a different category, such as at the technician level.
4. Your major field of study
In various job fields, it's not enough for your area of study to simply be related to the occupation. It must also be evaluated as "highly relevant". For instance, to become a dental hygienist, you need to have qualifications that are highly relevant to dental hygiene, dental hygiene therapy, or oral health therapy. However, studying or working in dentistry or dental surgery won't be viewed positively for this job since it's not considered highly relevant to the present industry standard in Australia.
5. Primary employment role
It is important to have a clear understanding of your main job role, which should correspond to the occupation you have nominated for the purpose of skills assessment. Although you may have multiple responsibilities within your organization, you must have experience working in the specific occupation you have nominated and be able to carry out tasks at the skill level required for that occupation, as described in ANZSCO.
6. Prioritize relevant work experience for your chosen occupation
Make sure that your work experience is closely related to the occupation you have nominated. Sometimes, applicants mistakenly assume that just because they have worked in a certain job within their industry, they are automatically qualified to do another job within that same industry. However, it is important to show evidence that you have actually performed the required job tasks and have the necessary skill level for a successful skills assessment.
7. Ensure you can prove your level of seniority
Make sure that you are able to provide evidence of your seniority level. We will examine the proof of your role in the companies you have been employed at. Can you exhibit the extent of your duties and level of power in the tasks you have undertaken? Also, where do you stand in the hierarchical structure of the organization? Do you possess an organizational chart that displays this information? To evaluate our managerial roles and some other job positions, we need an organizational chart. Additionally, the types of evidence we need might involve information on the projects you have participated in.

8. Understand the combination of qualification and employment that you will need
Before applying, it is important to comprehend the necessary combination of qualifications and work experience. A common mistake made by applicants is applying even though they only satisfy a few of the requirements.?
As an illustration, certain occupations we evaluate mandate a Bachelor's degree, but applicants may be eligible with alternative qualifications:
? Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree (or higher degree) with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment performed at the appropriate skill level in the last five years
or
? Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree (or higher degree) with an additional qualification assessed at the level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma level in a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post-qualification highly relevant employment performed at the appropriate skill level in the last five years.
or
? Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree (or higher degree) without a highly relevant field of study and at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment performed at the appropriate skill level in the last five years.
Please take note that the aforementioned level of evaluation takes into account your work experience subsequent to acquiring a Bachelor's degree. However, you may still submit an application based on prior employment experience, but there are specific regulations governing this.
9. If you are self-employed in a professional occupation, you will have to provide evidence
If you work for yourself in a professional field, you must show proof of this by submitting documents from your accountant or lawyer verifying your business registration information, the kind of business you run, and the duration of your self-employment. Additionally, you'll need to provide official documentation of your business or sole trading registration and a legal statement outlining your primary responsibilities during self-employment.
Bank statements showing consistent income received from your self-employment, along with corresponding client invoices, taxation proof, contracts, client endorsements, and evidence of completed projects may also serve as evidence.
It's crucial to comprehend how the assessment system functions, how your qualifications and work experience will be evaluated in conjunction, and the significance of the term "highly relevant."
If this appears too Complex, rest assured that Australia warmly welcomes skilled migrants. The Australian Government intends to grant 142,400 visas to skilled migrants in the 2022-23 fiscal year, allowing them to utilize their valuable abilities to help grow the economy. The majority of individuals you will encounter in Australia will be migrants or the descendants of migrants who, like you, came to start a new life for themselves and their families.
