I've found an interesting research from 2001, where Robert E. Kelley tried to find out working strategies, that distinguish top performers from an average developers. He shows, that top performers neither have a higher IQ, nor work longer hours. They just know some key strategies, that make them more performant. I'll mention just a couple of the strategies, the rest you can find here.
The first strategy is "small-l leadership". Average developers have a idea of "big-L Leadership", which means there is one Leader, which leads a team in all spheres, and the rest of the team. This means, that if he is not a Leader, than he is just waiting for requests from the Leader. Top developers take leadership in many different small things, although they might not be an official leader of the team.
The second strategy is "Teamwork as joint ownership of a project". An average developer thinks, that teamworks means, he is doing his part of work. Top performers do more, than that. They contribute into team goal-setting, accomplishments and dynamics, trying to help other team members to solve their problems.
What are the best strategies to become a top performer from your point of view?
