I still can't believe that 2020 lands in just a few short weeks! Seems incredible!
As we wrap up 2019, I wanted to share a guide that I use to coach individuals, teams, leaders, and even myself ..... to remember that anytime, even during the last few weeks of the year, you CAN still push through your highest productivity!
Don't get sidelined by the holiday and don't take your foot off the productivity-pedal! Keep these steps in-mind as you plan your "Success-filled year-end and New Year!
Step #1: Work at your peak
Be aware of your peak time, when do you function at your best ... are you a morning or afternoon person? You can accomplish highest productivity matching your "peak time" to key and challenging projects, bonus - this will also help reduce your stress as you match your ideal "bio-clock".
Step #2: Tend to your goals
Set clear goals for this year-end push to help prioritize your daily tasks and best manage your time. Goals keep you from those non-essential items and helps manage stressful deadlines.
Step #3: Work smarter, not harder!
This is an often-used cliché, but we tend to forget this!
Prioritize your day the full week and evening prior, keep your e-calendar organized and synced. Don't be afraid to schedule time in for difficult and challenging priorities and tasks. Remember to set phone & calendar reminders and alarms. Schedule and calendar gym, friend and family time. Don't forget to calendar "alone" time to create that important thinking space to be creative and mindful!
Focus daily on your objective for that day, the week, the month and even for the year ahead! When your mind is focused, something extraordinary happens! You set your own direction! Stress disappears, work becomes dynamic, fulfilling, success-filled and even fun.
Step #4: Team Up
Collaboration is important! Collaborate with your colleagues, leaders and cross-functional teams on projects, ideas, or processes that can be improved. Collaboration can give you new insights, feedback and emotional support - your collaboration partners can also use this important help from you as well - don't be too busy to give back to others! The support provided by your peers and leaders can also be critical for career growth and survival!
Step #5: Speak Your Mind
Be assertive, be dynamic, be bold! Ask for continuous feedback, speak up if you have innovative and impactful ideas! Raise your hand for critical projects - this helps get you noticed by your leaders!
Don't be timid to ask for those extra contacts! I believe we are all "sales and revenue drivers regardless of our job titles" - remember "More contacts = more contracts" and that means more revenue for your organization and more income opportunity for you!
Step #6: Eliminate Distractions
Stop needless interruptions that derail your day, put your cell phone face down so you don't get tempted to check it, especially when working on a critical project or deadline. Shut down your email and only check it once or twice an hour when on a deadline so you are not derailed by answering those emails that are not critical.
If you work remote, forget you are remote and act "as if you were in-office", in front of your boss! Don't be tempted to work on that "home project" or take or make calls to your friends, save those until your workday is over. Don't be tempted to do watch Instagram videos, YouTube channels, or Facebook streams that can derail your effectiveness and derail your workday.
Focus is critical to your success!
Step #7: Diversify & enrich your life
Holidays are an especially great time to become a volunteer for a worthy cause in the community. This helps create abundance and joy in your life while you increase that for others that may be challenged, especially during a holiday.
Take a new adventure, even if you can't go far - pick a new restaurant for your team or family, this promotes local businesses and helps to expand your cultural diversity. Learn a new technology, skill or new language.
Start a new exercise, fitness or nutrition plan! This is so important to maintain your health and vitality, make it a priority for the entire year, not only a "New Years resolution"!
Eat the right foods for your optimal health ! I don't think you would run your car on gross clogged oil ... think of the best fuel for your body, to run it's best, and for your brain to think at it's best!
Get outside and walk during your breaks - start a team "walking group", host your meetings out of the office and get out in the fresh air! I recall some of my best meetings were running along a hillside trail with a previous employer's CEO and CFO who were both also avid runners! We found this kept us healthy, motivated to innovate, and helped us collaborate and clearly think out solutions!
Bad weather keeping you indoors? Look for other indoor "non-conference room" areas that you can hold your meetings - the meal space, open area, office gym, or lobby space! Get creative!
If you have balance in your life, you are better able to withstand job pressures and demands, and you will be healthier, happier and success-filled!
Step #8: Laugh!
Laughter improves respiration and circulation; it also helps reduce tension and stress. Daily try to find something to laugh at, even at the end of a stressful day, watch a video that makes you laugh out loudly!
Smile with your co-workers, your manager, leaders and your customers! This helps reduce those feelings of workplace tension and may even be the cheer someone needs in their crazy stress-filled day!
Step #9: Repeat each step as often as needed!
Remember each day you are important, you are a success, and you are capable of charging ahead, creating your momentum and thriving!
Wishing you a Joyful & Success-filled 2020 Ahead!
