9 SAFe?Metrics That Matter for Agile Transformation
Scaled Agile (SAFe?) Training by Agilemania
Thriving in the Digital Age with Business Agility!
Hey everyone! Welcome to the Third edition of our newsletter— The Scaled Agile Press! ??? It's an initiative by Agilemania for all the SAFe? practitioners and enthusiasts.
It's critical to measure what matters in your business. Measuring progress means moving towards business agility, which is the ability to respond quickly to market changes and emerging opportunities with innovative, digitally-enabled business solutions.
SAFe? provides a comprehensive set of metrics across three domains - Outcomes, Flow, and Competency - to guide data-driven improvement. Here are 9 key SAFe? metrics to focus on:
9 SAFe? Metrics That Matter for Agile Transformation
1?? Flow Velocity: This measures the throughput of your value streams in terms of work items like stories, features, or capabilities delivered per iteration or PI. Tracking velocity trends helps identify bottlenecks impacting delivery speed.
2?? Flow Time: The elapsed time for a work item to move from concept to production deployment. Minimizing flow time reduces time-to-market and prioritizes work that maximizes customer value.
3?? Flow Load: Visualized through Cumulative Flow Diagrams, flow load indicates the amount of work presently in your value stream. Limiting WIP optimizes flow time and velocity.
4?? Flow Efficiency: This measures the ratio of value-adding time vs. wait time in your workflow. Value stream mapping identifies delays to improve efficiency.
5?? Flow Predictability: Tracked through the ART Predictability Measure, this indicates how reliably teams deliver against their planned program objectives, enabling better business forecasting.
6?? OKRs and KPIs: Objectives and Key Results quantify portfolio-level strategic goals, while Key Performance Indicators measure outcomes for specific value streams.
7?? Quality Metrics: Measures like defects leaked, test coverage, and technical debt help assess quality and guide investments required for continuous improvement.
8?? Agile Release Train (ART): Performance Metrics like ART burn-up/down charts, program predictability, and value delivered provide insights into the performance of ARTs, which are the value delivery engines in SAFe?.
9?? Competency: The Seven Core Competency Assessments evaluate capabilities across the seven competencies vital for business agility, pinpointing opportunities for advancement.

1 年Just realized that the famous DORA metrics is another one to the list, and soon AI/ML related metrics will kick in. Soon, top execs will be neck deep in metrics and the main purpose can get diluted with so many metrics being tracked and reported! ??

1 年Well, a ton of metrics....isn't it supposed to be a simplified set? Yes...what's suitable and applicable for each org and LOB is to be considered to begin with and sustain. Reevaluate the need of these time and again and add more if you have the right yard sticks to measure IMO.
